Women are the foundation of the society, but they did not have much exposure outside the home in the past. Household work, raising children, and helping in farms or small home-based tasks are considered her basic responsibility. Education was given less importance, career options was unseen. Even though Kashmiri women were hardworking and strong, their work was not always seen in public life.

Today, the situation is changing. Women’s exposure has become an important need for society in Kashmir. Families now understand that daughters should get the same education as sons. Now many women are running their own small businesses and self-help groups. In districts like Srinagar, Baramulla and Anantnag etc. Women sell traditional products both in markets and online. This shows the women’s contribution for the family and society providing jobs to others. Many women work in banks, offices, hospitals, and schools. Many families now depend on both husband and wife earning money. Life has become more expensive, so it is helpful when both partners work. When a woman is working and financially supporting her husband, the family is strengthened and becomes happy. It also generates respect and understanding between the husband and wife. They make decisions together and have a better future planned for their children.

Kashmiri women are also doing well in sports and arts. Bilquis Mir has represented India in canoeing and brought pride to Kashmir. Many young girls now take part in sports, journalism, and social work. Their success encourages other girls to believe in themselves and aim higher. Women’s exposure also improves family life. Educated and working women feel more confident in sharing their opinions about children’s education, health, and other family matters. When husbands and wives share responsibilities at home, there is more peace and balance in the family. Many men in Kashmir now support their wives’ careers and understand that progress comes when both partners work together.

In some areas of Kashmir, girls still face restrictions when it comes to working far from home. Safety concerns and social pressure can also create problems. Society needs to support women by providing safe workplaces, equal opportunities, and access to skill development programs. Community leaders, educator, and families should encourage girls to continue their education and confidently build their careers. Women’s exposure does not mean leaving traditions. Kashmiri women continue to protect their culture, language, and values while manage their homes and developing professional lives, maintaining a respectful balance between tradition and progress.
