In recent years, the phrase “Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir” has started appearing more often in conversations, campaigns and community discussions across the region. But beyond the slogans and posters, it shows a deeper concern, one that many families quietly struggle with and many young people are increasingly exposed to.

Drug abuse is no longer a distant or rare issue in Jammu and Kashmir. It has slowly made its way into neighbourhoods, colleges and even rural areas. What makes it more worrying is that it often begins casually, through peer pressure, curiosity or an attempt to escape stress and before one realizes it, it turns into dependency. Behind every statistic is a real story, a family dealing with pain, a parent losing sleep or a young life losing direction.

The “Nasha Mukt” initiative is an attempt to respond to this growing crisis, not just through enforcement but through awareness and support. It tries to bring people together, students, teachers, parents, religious leaders and authorities so that the issue is not ignored or hidden anymore. One of the most important shifts this campaign promotes is the idea that addiction should be treated as a health issue rather than simply a crime. This change in perspective matters because it encourages people to seek help instead of suffering in silence.

Across districts, awareness programs are being held in schools and colleges where young people are spoken to openly about the risks of substance use. These sessions are not always formal lectures, many of them are conversations where students ask questions and share their thoughts. Such interactions help in breaking myths and making the topic less taboo.

At the same time, there is a growing effort to strengthen counselling and rehabilitation services. Recovery is not easy and it cannot happen overnight. It requires patience, guidance and a support system that does not judge. Families also play a crucial role here. Often, understanding and emotional support from loved ones can make a significant difference in someone’s journey toward recovery.

Law enforcement agencies are also working to control the supply side by taking action against drug peddlers. However, it is widely understood that reducing demand is just as important as cutting supply. If young people are informed, engaged and supported, the chances of them falling into substance abuse decrease.

What stands out about this movement is that it is not limited to government efforts alone. Many local volunteers, social workers and community groups have started taking responsibility in their own areas. Small initiatives like neighbourhood awareness drives or peer support groups are contributing in meaningful ways.

The road ahead is not simple. Challenges remain and change takes time. But acknowledging the problem is the first step and that step has already been taken. If the momentum continues and if communities stay involved, there is hope that the message of a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir will not just remain a slogan but slowly become a reality.
