Sopore, often called the “Apple Town” of Kashmir, is one of the major commercial centers of North Kashmir. The town has traditionally been known for trade, horticulture, and busy local markets. Over the years, Sopore has changed from a small town into a rapidly developing urban center, also known as the (Sadar Bazaar of Kashmir). This transformation has improved economic activity, transportation, education, and public facilities. However, rapid urban growth has also created several social, environmental, and administrative problems.

The development of the urban area of Sopore is largely dependent on the commercial activity in the region. The town plays a vital role as a commercial hub in the neighbouring regions like Rafiabad, Zaingeer, Kupwara, and Bandipora. Owing to improved road transport facilities and business prospects, the people living in the adjacent villages frequently visit Sopore for various purposes like purchasing goods, healthcare services, education, and employment.

Horticulture has played a major role in the development of Sopore. The famous Sopore Fruit Mandi is considered one of Asia’s largest fruit markets. Every year, large quantities of apples and other fruits are exported from this mandi to different parts of India. The fruit trade employs thousands of people, including traders, labourers, transporters, packaging workers, and farmers. Because of this economic importance, Sopore has experienced continuous growth in business activities, housing, and population.

The significance of traditional marketplaces such as Bada Bazar and Chota Bazar is still significant for the town’s economy. In these markets, there are wholesale and retail stores providing clothes, electrical goods, groceries, jewellery, crafts, and other typical products of Kashmir. Other places, like Main Chowk and Iqbal Market, have now become thriving business hubs as well. The presence of increased numbers of shops, banks, hotels, food joints, and transport services is a clear indication of the increased urbanity of Sopore.

Urbanization has also resulted in many improvements in the infrastructure of many parts of the town. Schools, hospitals, coaching institutes, roads, and government departments have now been set up. There has been an extension of residential colonies to the periphery of the town as more families are now migrating to Sopore in search of better opportunities and amenities.

The government has introduced different projects to improve urban facilities in Sopore. Plans for road widening, parking spaces, truck terminals, street lighting, and expansion of the fruit mandi are being discussed and implemented. Efforts are also being made to modernize the mandi with better transport and storage facilities. Such projects are important for supporting the growing population and increasing commercial activity in the town.

Despite these developments, urbanization has created many challenges for Sopore. Traffic congestion is one of the most serious problems. The roads of the town were originally designed for a smaller population and fewer vehicles. Today, the number of cars, buses, trucks, and motorcycles has increased rapidly. During the apple season, hundreds of trucks enter the town daily, leading to long traffic jams in market areas. Narrow roads and increasing commercial activity have made transportation difficult for residents and visitors.

The other serious problem is the problem of improper urban planning. In many cases, construction has been done rapidly and unorganized. Consequently, there has been overcrowding in markets, a shortage of parking facilities, and pressure on public utilities. In many places, there have been roadside encroachments and improper building plans, which have made the town look ugly and less efficient. It is essential to have proper planning for managing the future development of the town in an organized manner.

Problems regarding waste management are also increasing day by day. Due to the increase in the population and business activities in the town, there has been a substantial increase in the production of waste material. There is no proper system for garbage collection and disposal. Consequently, garbage can be found scattered along the roadsides, marketplaces, and water sources.

Environmental stress is increasing due to urbanization. There is a reduction in open areas owing to increased construction work. There is an increase in the pollution level in densely populated regions due to traffic and problems associated with waste disposal. In the case of Sopore, the pollution in the Jhelum River is mainly due to waste dumping and drainage issues. Unless some environmental actions are planned, there is a possibility that future generations will be affected by ecological stress.

The pressure on civic facilities is another matter of concern because of the growing population in the town. Some of the civic service problems in Sopore include electrical faults, a shortage of drinking water, and drainage facilities. Commercial activity has increased significantly; therefore, better management of civic facilities is required.

Fruit mandi’s current state brings out some issues regarding urban development in Sopore. While the mandi plays a critical role in trade in the city and earns money to thousands of families in Sopore, there are various facilities that are missing in the region. People involved in trading at the market face problems in terms of sanitation, traffic congestion, water availability, and even storage. The lack of modern facilities will limit the development of the fruit trade, thus affecting the status of Sopore economically.

In addition, urbanization affects the social life of the people living in Sopore. As education improves, the level of professionalism among the people rises. New professions emerge due to changing lifestyles, increased application of technology, and access to education. Issues such as expensive land, unemployment, and housing needs are becoming common among the people.

The future of Sopore is dependent upon appropriate and balanced urban planning. There is great economic potential in the town owing to the presence of its horticulture sector, business markets, and appropriate geographical location. Urban planning should concentrate on improving road networks, waste management through science, construction of advanced markets, protection of the environment, and efficient public services. Public involvement and proper planning play a vital role in achieving success in urban management.

To summarize, urbanization has contributed to Sopore being an economically vibrant and commercially significant town of North Kashmir. Urbanization in the form of expanding markets, improved infrastructure, and increased trade activities has played an instrumental role in the enhanced significance of the town. However, there are also issues like traffic jams, inefficient waste management, environmental pollution, and pressures on public utilities. Despite all these difficulties, balanced urban growth can be achieved if appropriate steps are taken for the development of the town.
