The event assumed special significance as it was addressed by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who highlighted India’s centuries-old civilizational ethos of coexistence and mutual respect. Speaking before a distinguished audience, the Lieutenant Governor emphasized that India has historically served as a sanctuary where different faiths, cultures, and traditions have flourished side by side. He described the country’s spiritual heritage as a beacon of hope in an increasingly fragmented world. The central message emerging from the dialogue was that peace cannot be sustained merely through political arrangements or legal frameworks. It requires continuous efforts to cultivate respect, understanding, and trust among communities. In this regard, interfaith engagement serves as an essential bridge, helping people appreciate the common ethical foundations that exist across religions.Addressing the gathering, the Lieutenant Governor referred to the philosophy of “Bhartiyata” or Indianness, describing it as a cultural and civilizational framework that promotes equal respect for all religions and recognizes the world as one family. He observed that ancient Indian traditions, including the teachings contained in the Vedas and Upanishads, consistently advocated harmonious living and encouraged humanity to seek truth through multiple paths. One of the most noteworthy aspects of the event was the focus on Jammu and Kashmir’s unique tradition of coexistence. The Valley has historically served as a meeting point of diverse spiritual traditions, including Shaivism, Buddhism, Sufism, and Islam. Over centuries, these traditions have interacted with one another, producing a rich cultural synthesis that continues to shape the region’s identity.

The Lieutenant Governor linked this heritage to the idea of Kashmiriyat, describing it as an expression of the broader Indian ethos that celebrates diversity rather than perceiving it as a source of division. He noted that for generations, the people of Kashmir have demonstrated how different faith communities can coexist while preserving their individual identities and cultural practices. The discussion also highlighted the historical interaction between Indian philosophical traditions and Islamic scholarship. Reference was made to the arrival of Sufi saints and scholars who found resonance between their teachings and the indigenous traditions of compassion, spirituality, and human dignity. The exchange of ideas between different civilizations contributed significantly to the intellectual and cultural development of the region and helped strengthen bonds among communities.

Importantly, the event was not limited to reflections on history. Participants repeatedly stressed the relevance of interfaith dialogue in contemporary society. The rapid spread of misinformation, hate speech, and social media-driven polarization has made genuine communication between communities more necessary than ever before. Educational institutions, civil society organizations, writers, and community leaders all have a crucial role to play in promoting dialogue and preventing misunderstandings from escalating into conflict.A major emphasis was placed on the role of youth. Speakers observed that young people are inheriting a world characterized by unprecedented connectivity as well as unprecedented divisions. Equipping them with the values of empathy, tolerance, and critical thinking is essential for building a peaceful future. Interfaith initiatives can provide young citizens with opportunities to engage directly with people from different backgrounds and challenge stereotypes that often arise from ignorance or misinformation. The participation of leading intellectuals and public figures added depth to the discussions. Among those present were veteran statesman Dr. Karan Singh, University of Kashmir Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan, Inter-Faith Harmony Foundation of India President Dr. Khwaja Iftikhar Ahmed, NCPUL Director Dr. Md. Shams Equbal, Dara Shikoh Centre Founder Director Dr. Jyotsna Singh, Fida Firdouse and several distinguished literary personalities, administrators, and civil society representatives. Their presence reflected the broad-based support for initiatives aimed at strengthening social harmony and national integration.

Particularly noteworthy was the participation of writers, scholars, and cultural activists who have long contributed to preserving Kashmir’s pluralistic traditions. Literature, language, and culture often succeed where political discourse fails. Through stories, poetry, scholarship, and public engagement, writers can create spaces where people encounter each other’s experiences and develop a deeper appreciation of shared human values. The choice of Srinagar as the venue carried symbolic importance. Kashmir has experienced periods of conflict and uncertainty, yet it continues to possess a powerful legacy of spiritual dialogue and cultural resilience. Hosting an interfaith event in the Valley sends a strong message that the ideals of coexistence remain relevant and achievable despite contemporary challenges. As the gathering concluded, one message stood out clearly: humanity’s future depends not on emphasizing differences but on discovering common ground. Whether expressed through religious teachings, philosophical traditions, or cultural practices, the values of compassion, justice, dignity, and mutual respect remain universal.

The Srinagar Interfaith Dialogue was therefore more than a ceremonial event. It was a reminder that peace is built through conversation, understanding, and shared responsibility. In a world increasingly divided by identity-based conflicts, the principles discussed at the gathering offer a roadmap for fostering trust and cooperation. For Jammu and Kashmir, the dialogue reaffirmed an enduring truth: the region’s greatest strength lies in its capacity to bring people together, celebrate diversity, and uphold the timeless values of harmony and coexistence that have defined its cultural landscape for centuries.About the Author
