Muharram 2026 has already left behind memories, emotions, and messages which do not relate to rituals only. Elegies sounded in cities and villages, processions moved orderly and calmly, water and food was being distributed by volunteers, even representatives of other communities could be found mourning. For many people, the days of Muharram became the way to commemorate the eternal sacrifice of Imam Hussain A.S who preferred to ATTAIN SHAHDAH for truth instead of living comfortably and prefer pride to servility. However, there is a rather awkward question that arises after all discussions and routine work resumes: where to go further? Will the message be implemented through actions or will be forgotten for the rest of the year? The answer to this question defines the very idea of Muharram: whether it will be alive or becomes just another yearly event. The memory of Karbala is essential but implementation of its ideas is even more so. The true test of faith starts when all flags are taken down and crowds disperse.

Karbala has always been bigger than a month, because its essence is relevant to all people, who are required to make moral decisions each day of their life. Imam were fighting against injustice not to get any popularity, any kind of power or personal profit, but in order to defend the truth and stand for accountability and resistance against oppression even in the hardest circumstances. This is the message for our time, when lying is much more comfortable than telling the truth, and staying silent is easier than revealing the injustice. This is the right way of paying tribute to Karbala: doing things in daily life, like refusing to cheat on a test, even if the whole class encourages you to do this; resisting corruption, even if there is a large amount of money; telling the truth, despite of any threat to your job; and helping your neighbours in spite of the disagreements. The spirit of Muharram should change people in everyday life, which means in the work environment, school, home and wherever. Otherwise, this memory will be useless.

One of those aspects which made Muharram 2026 unique was the spirit of serving manifested everywhere. Many people were involved in the organization of processions, cleaning, assistance in emergencies, distribution of beverages, helping elderly people pass crowds. People felt like it was part of their worship to serve others. The question is whether this spirit would be preserved beyond those holy days. What would happen if people would devote all of their efforts to Muharram throughout the year by organizing campaigns of blood donation, educational campaigns, environment-friendly projects, providing help to people affected by disasters or bad living conditions? Communities would get stronger, and the values of Karbala would turn into actions. Serving shouldn’t be limited to Muharram days only; it should become routine. People whose memories of Imam Hussain a.s are kept alive are distinguished not only by the big scale of their Muharram celebrations but also by their readiness to help needy people even many days after the end of processions.

It was also a good lesson for the unity that is much needed at the moment because the world is becoming more and more polarized due to politics, clashes on social media platforms, and ignorance of religion. Those from different religious backgrounds have collaborated to make sure that the activities go in peace, proving that it is possible to coexist in harmony despite disagreements. This has to continue. There is no way for communities to embrace peace for some days and abandon it the remaining period of the year. Dialogues should prevail over suspicion and respect over prejudice. The youth should also do a lot in this respect. Instead of using the internet to spread hate and lies, they should use it to promote dialogue and highlight acts of goodness and the cry for peace. The teachings of Karbala are about resilience without hate and bravery without cruelty. They only make sense when applied in all interactions.

It is now this duty of the coming generation. They not only inherit the tales of Karbala but the responsibility of safeguarding the ideals of these tales. Each generation makes its choices in different ways. Some may face the challenge of injustices existing in the world of politics, while some may have to fight the corrupt, discriminatory, deceitful, and apathetic tendencies of their surroundings. The tradition of Imam Hussain a.s guides us without any demands for perfection from his side. He requires the people to be honest even when honesty proves costly, to be kind even when society is apathetic, and to be brave even when it seems comfortable to remain silent. It is this month of Muharram that will help the young hearts grow into better scholars, responsible citizens, ethical professionals, and trustworthy family members. It is not necessary that it needs heroic deeds of some selected few but small steps that we need to make every day. It is then that a nation can become great when its youth makes these ideals reach its schools and workplaces.

While Muharram 2026 may be long gone from the calendar, the lesson should not fade away. Year by year, people get an opportunity to remember Karbala. However, remembering will not make the difference. It can only occur when remembering leads to action. The suffering remembered through the process of sacrifice needs to translate into being honest in our trade dealings, good leadership, kindness toward our neighbours, respect for those with different views than us, and standing for justice when needed. This is how Muharram can continue. The memory of Imam Hussain is more than just history. It occurs when conscience triumphs over the seduction of comfort. Once all the flags have been lowered and normalcy has returned to life, a single question rings in silence. What after Muharram? It has nothing to do with any gathering or convention. It is up to us until Muharram returns again.
