JNV is a complete package for students. It offers education, sports, CCA and a wide range of exposure and competitions. It provides students with everything they need, including stationery, uniforms and other essential items, free of cost, making quality education more affordable.
It was a bright, sunny day on 23 August 2012 when I first set foot on the campus of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya. It felt almost enigmatic, as everything was new: a new school, new people, new teachers, residential schooling and everything else that came with being a student at JNV. I studied there for seven years, from Class 6 to Class 12. 31 March 2019 was my last day at JNV as a student, and those years still remain the most memorable and cherished time of my life, filled with love, laughter and countless lessons.
In Kashmir, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya’s (JNVs) have emerged as an important part of the educational landscape, providing talented students from rural backgrounds with access to quality education, residential facilities and opportunities that might otherwise remain beyond their reach. As of now, there are over 650 JNVs functioning nationally and 20 in Kashmir, providing cost effective education to countless students. The best feature of these schools is merit-based admission, allowing students to compete for a place. Candidates need to appear for a selection test called the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST), which filters meritorious and talented students of a district into JNV.
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas were established with the vision of providing good quality modern education to talented children, especially those from rural areas, irrespective of their families’ financial backgrounds. The USP of these schools is affordability. It provides the best at minimum cost, with reserved students studying free and general students paying a minor fee from Class 9 onwards. Not only is the education free, but accommodation and mess are also free, along with Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti providing stationery items, uniforms and regular use items to its students. This particularly takes off a huge burden from underprivileged students, providing an opportunity to access better education at free or at a minimal cost for all.
One unique feature in such schools is the bond between teachers and students. It is not just the regular six- or seven-hour interaction; rather, it is 24 hours. A teacher there is not only your teacher. He is your batting partner, your captain, or you are his captain. He is your friend, your warden, house master, or someone you walk and laugh with beyond the walls of the classroom. They are more than mentors; they are family. They reach out to you when you are sick and take care of you. This environment makes the student teacher bond more detailed and affectionate.
Even the student-student interaction is beyond normal length. You stay together 24 hours, eat from the same plate, sleep on the same bed, and do all the student shenanigans together. You play, study, argue and walk together, take care of each other when things go down, hide each other’s secrets and mischief, and become each other’s brother, companion and caretaker. He can be your greatest competitor in any inter house competition, yet your best friend. You may not be on good terms, but still play a match together for your house and all those things that are part of student life in any residential school.
The quality and importance of JNVs are not limited to education only. They focus on the holistic growth of a student through sports, art, culture, NCC, scouts & guides, CCA and other activities. The cluster and regional level annual sports meet has a different buzz, where different schools visit a particular school as a venue to compete with other schools. It brings a culture of competition, exchange, a sense of integration and provides necessary recreation among students, while also serving as a launching platform for talented students to excel in sports. Regular competitions in arts, music, writing and debates further sharpen students’ skills.
One thing I feel is necessary to mention is the installation of leadership skills in students in these schools. You can be a house captain, mess captain, sports captain, cleanliness captain, school captain, CR, monitor and so on. This in students brings a sense of leadership, accountability and responsibility. They lead campaigns, meetings and conferences and may even tomorrow lead an organisation.
JNVs also promote social interaction and national integration. Students from different regions and backgrounds study together and develop friendships beyond their immediate communities. The migration scheme between selected JNVs in different linguistic regions further exposes students to India’s cultural and linguistic diversity. For students from Kashmir, such experiences can broaden their understanding of the country while allowing others to learn about Kashmir’s culture and traditions. Even the school houses are strategically organized to represent the four geographical extremes of the nation: North, South, East, and West. This structure effectively fosters a deep sense of patriotism and national integration among the students.”
One thing that sets JNV apart is the inter house competitions. Houses named after mountain ranges of India, Aravalli, Nilgiri, Shivalik and Udaigiri, have their staunch and loyal fan bases. No matter what, there is no point an Aravalli student would support Shivalik. Yes, Aravalli Nilgiri and Shivalik Udaigiri are considered entwined twins or tag team partners, having intense rivalry with one another. Even after seven years of leaving Navodaya, when I meet a fellow Navodayan, the first question we ask is, “Which house?” The connection among Navodaya’s is instant, always, and I have felt it myself.
So, JNV is a complete package for students who wish to be enrolled in a residential school. You have to defeat hundreds to secure a spot and become a Navodayan. Today, thousands of Navodayans serve Kashmir and the nation across various fields, including bureaucracy, police, politics and education.
