SRINAGAR :- Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Akshay Labroo today presided over an Awareness-cum-Registration Camp under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana at Ghanta Ghar, Lal Chowk to promote rooftop solar energy adoption and sensitise the citizens about the benefits and provisions of the flagship scheme.
The camp was organised by the Executive Engineer, KPDCL-Ist Srinagar, with the objective of educating residents about rooftop solar installations and facilitating on-the-spot registration of eligible households under the scheme.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner encouraged citizens to adopt rooftop solar energy solutions to reduce household electricity expenditure and contribute towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable energy future. He stressed the importance of creating greater public awareness about renewable energy initiatives and ensuring that eligible households are informed about the benefits and procedures associated with the scheme.
The DC highlighted that the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has reached 7,910 households in Srinagar, reflecting the scheme’s expanding reach across the district and growing efforts to promote decentralised renewable energy generation at the household level.
Underscoring the significance of the awareness initiative, the DC said that the programme was aimed at informing residents about the benefits of rooftop solar installations while providing them with an appropriate opportunity to register for the scheme on the spot.
He noted that the scheme is demand-driven and voluntary in nature and urged eligible residents to explore its benefits and enrol themselves. He emphasised that wider adoption of rooftop solar energy can help households manage electricity expenses while contributing to environmental conservation and reducing dependence on conventional sources of power.
During the programme, the DC inspected the awareness and registration stalls established by KPDCL officials and scheme vendors. He interacted with the representatives, reviewed the information and registration facilities being provided to the public and encouraged them to sustain outreach efforts to ensure that more eligible households are made aware of the scheme.
As a part of the awareness campaign, a nukkad natak (street play) was also staged to sensitise the
public about the advantages of rooftop solar installations, the importance of renewable energy and the benefits available under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
The campaign forms part of the broader efforts of the Government supported initiative to promote renewable energy, improve awareness about solar initiatives and encourage households to participate in the transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
