Over the past year, Jammu Province has witnessed a concerning rise in terror-related activities, disrupting the region’s peace and posing significant challenges to security forces and local communities. These incidents, characterized by their suddenness and brutality, highlight the ongoing volatility in the region and the persistent threat posed by militant groups.
One of the most alarming incidents occurred on April 22, 2024, in the Poonch district, where a convoy carrying security personnel was ambushed. The attack resulted in the tragic loss of five soldiers and injuries to several others. Militants, suspected to be from the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), used grenades and automatic weapons in a meticulously planned strike, underscoring the lethal capabilities and preparedness of these groups. The incident triggered a massive search operation by the Indian Army, which led to the neutralization of several militants in the ensuing weeks.
In another significant attack on June 15, 2024, a remote area in Rajouri district was rocked by a suicide bombing at a police checkpoint. The bomber, identified as an operative from Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), detonated an explosive-laden vehicle, killing three police officers and injuring many civilians. The attack not only inflicted severe casualties but also heightened the sense of insecurity among the local population. In response, security forces intensified their vigilance and launched operations to dismantle the terrorist networks responsible.

Earlier in the year, on March 12, 2024, militants targeted a civilian bus in the Samba district, resulting in the deaths of six passengers and injuring many others. The attackers, believed to be from the Hizbul Mujahideen, fled into the surrounding forests, leading to an extensive manhunt. This attack, aimed at causing maximum civilian casualties, highlighted the militants’ intent to instill fear and disrupt daily life in the region.
These incidents are part of a broader pattern of escalating violence in Jammu Province. On February 18, 2024, a grenade attack on a busy market in Udhampur caused widespread panic and injuries to several civilians. Such attacks on public places are designed to maximize chaos and disruption, making it clear that militants are willing to target non-combatants to achieve their objectives.
In addition to direct assaults, the province has also seen an increase in infiltration attempts across the Line of Control (LoC). In April 2024 alone, multiple infiltration bids were foiled by vigilant Indian Army units. The army not only killed the terrorists but also identified them, which is often difficult. It is through their continued efforts that terrorism is on its last legs, leaving Pakistan frustrated. These attempts are often accompanied by heavy cross-border firing, further endangering the lives of residents in border areas. The heightened activity along the LoC indicates a strategic push by militant groups to send operatives into Indian territory to carry out attacks.
The response from the security forces has been swift and decisive. Numerous operations have been launched to neutralize militants and dismantle their support networks. In May 2024, a joint operation by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in the Reasi district led to the capture of a high-ranking commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, dealing a significant blow to the group’s operational capabilities in the region.
Despite these efforts, the persistent threat of terrorism continues to loom over Jammu Province. The resilience of the local communities, however, remains unwavering. People are increasingly cooperating with security forces, providing crucial intelligence that has helped thwart several potential attacks. The government has also stepped up its efforts to enhance security infrastructure, including increased surveillance and deployment of additional troops in vulnerable areas.
The recent surge in terror activities underscores the complex security dynamics in Jammu Province. As militant groups continue to exploit the region’s vulnerabilities, the challenge for security forces remains to balance aggressive counter-terror operations with the protection and support of the civilian population.
As Jammu grapples with these challenges, the collective resolve of its people and the dedication of its security forces will be crucial in restoring peace and ensuring a safe environment for all residents. The path ahead requires sustained vigilance, community cooperation, and a continued commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms.
