Recent tragic events in India have brought into sharp focus the pervasive issue of violence against women and the troubling patterns of victim-blaming that accompany such crimes. The brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, the devastating case of Ankita Bauri from Burdwan University, and numerous other incidents underscore the urgent need for systemic change and highlight the disturbing tendency to blame victims.

**The RG Kar Medical College Tragedy**

On August 9, a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College was found murdered after enduring a brutal assault. Having worked a grueling 36-hour shift, she sought rest in a seminar room—a place she considered a “second home.” Her belongings remained untouched, starkly revealing the savagery of the crime. The victim’s family, grappling with their immense loss, has demanded justice, lamenting how their dreams for their daughter’s future were cruelly shattered.

Imagine your legs forcefully torn apart,
Your pelvis shattering under the strain.
Your neck strangled tight, till blood fills your mouth,
Your specs crushed, piercing your eyes with pain.

This isn’t a nightmare, but a harrowing truth,
Of a 2nd-year PG in Chest Medicine’s plight.
At RG Kar Medical College, the horror unfolds,
A reality, not a tale of the night.

This transcends the realm of doctors and care,
It’s a cry for humanity, if any still there.
Speak up, let your voice be a beacon of light,
Don’t let this injustice fade into the night.

In another harrowing incident, Ankita Bauri, a student from Burdwan University, was raped and murdered after attending a march for justice. Her attackers used extreme violence, crushing her face with a stone and slashing her throat to prevent identification. The media’s lack of coverage and public indifference to her murder have sparked widespread outrage, revealing deep-seated issues within societal and legal systems.

**The Frequency and Brutality of Rape Cases in India**

The frequency and brutality of rape cases in India continue to shock and sadden us. Recent incidents, such as the Delhi High Court’s conviction of a father for raping his minor daughter for over two years, highlight the monstrous nature of some perpetrators. In Jamshedpur, a 3.5-year-old nursery student was raped by her school bus driver, a chilling reminder of the vulnerability of the youngest among us.

Crime Statistics in Srinagar (2019 – January 31, 2024)**

To further illustrate the gravity of the situation, let’s look at some crime statistics from Srinagar:

– **Kidnapping and Rape Cases:**
– 2019: 98 cases
– 2020: 21 cases
– 2021: 100 cases
– 2022: 128 cases
– 2023: 100 cases

– 2022: Data not specified
– 2023: Data not specified
– 2024 (up to January 31):

– **Attempted Suicide Cases:**
– 2019: 15 cases

**Systemic Failures and Victim-Blaming**

These cases are not isolated incidents but part of a broader pattern of systemic failures and societal attitudes that perpetuate violence against women. Victim-blaming, where the victim is held responsible for the crime committed against them, is a pervasive issue that hinders justice and perpetuates trauma. This toxic mindset often manifests in comments about the victim’s clothing, behavior, or choices, diverting attention from the perpetrator’s actions.

**The Need for Comprehensive Reform**

Addressing violence against women requires comprehensive reforms at multiple levels. Legal reforms must ensure swift and stringent punishment for perpetrators, while societal attitudes need a fundamental shift. Education and awareness campaigns can play a crucial role in changing mindsets and promoting gender equality. Additionally, support systems for survivors, including counseling and legal aid, must be strengthened to help them rebuild their lives.
If we look what our religion said about this :-
The teachings of the Qur’an, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Bible converge on the principles of justice, righteousness, and the protection of human dignity. Surah An-Nisa (4:135) calls for unwavering justice, the Bhagavad Gita emphasizes our duty to act rightly, and Proverbs 31:8-9 in the Bible urges us to defend the rights of the vulnerable. These sacred texts collectively remind us that it is our moral and spiritual responsibility to stand against the atrocity of rape, ensuring that every individual can live with dignity and safety.

In the words of these timeless scriptures, let us find the strength to create a world where justice prevails and the sanctity of human life is upheld. Remember, as Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” By embodying these teachings, we can pave the way for a future where respect, justice, and compassion are the cornerstones of our society.

**Why is India so Compassionate to Rapists? A Call for Stricter Laws**

The punishment for rape in Saudi Arabia is a public beheading after administering the rapist with a sedative.

✓ North Korea sentences rapists to death by firing squad.

Rapists in Afghanistan are shot in the head within 4 days or hanged to death depending on the judgment handed out by the court.

In Singapore, rapists face a minimum of 8 to 20 years in prison along with corporal punishment, including caning. Iran imposes severe penalties, including public execution, for those found guilty of rape. China, too, does not hold back, often sentencing rapists to death, carried out swiftly.

Why is India so compassionate to the rapists, @narendramodi?

Despite the horrific nature of the crime, India’s legal system often seems lenient in comparison. The Nirbhaya case, which shook the nation, took years to see justice served. The delay and perceived leniency send a dangerous message to potential offenders.

Why can’t we have strict laws like the other countries that will run a shiver down these monsters’ spine even at the thought of doing something like this?

It’s time for India to reevaluate its stance on punishment for such heinous crimes. Stricter laws and swift justice can act as a deterrent, ensuring that the sanctity and safety of individuals are upheld. We must demand a system that reflects zero tolerance for rape, ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served promptly and effectively.

**Conclusion**

The tragic stories of the postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Ankita Bauri serve as stark reminders of the urgent need for change. As a society, we must stand in solidarity with the victims, demand justice, and work towards creating a safer and more equitable environment for all women. The fight against violence and victim-blaming is a collective responsibility, and it is imperative that we confront these issues head-on to pave the way for a better future.
