Children in primary classes should be spending their school days learning, playing and discovering new things. Instead, many are forced to carry school bags loaded with heavy books, notebooks and other materials. This growing burden deserves urgent attention from parents, schools and education authorities.
Children in primary classes are at an important stage of physical and mental development. Their bodies are still growing, and carrying unnecessarily heavy school bags can cause back, neck and shoulder pain, discomfort and poor posture. While the effects may vary from child to child, the risk of putting unnecessary strain on young bodies should not be ignored.
The question is simple. Why should a young child carry so many books to school every day? Education at the primary level should focus on building basic knowledge, developing reading and writing skills, encouraging creativity and improving understanding. These goals can be achieved through well-planned lessons without forcing children to carry more books than they need.
The problem also raises questions about school management and the implementation of existing guidelines on school bag weight. Schools must review their daily requirements and ensure that children carry only essential materials. Timetables should be planned carefully so that students do not need to bring every textbook and notebook to school each day. Where possible, schools should provide lockers or allow children to keep certain books in their classrooms.
Parents also have a role to play. They should regularly check their children’s bags and remove unnecessary items. However, the responsibility cannot rest on parents alone. Schools must give clear instructions about the books and materials required for each day and avoid placing unnecessary demands on young students.
Education authorities should regularly inspect schools and ensure compliance with applicable guidelines on school bag weight. Schools should also encourage teaching methods that reduce dependence on printed material and make learning more practical, engaging and child-friendly.
A heavy school bag may seem like a small issue to adults, but for a child, it can make the daily journey to school uncomfortable. Education should support a child’s growth, not create avoidable physical strain.
The purpose of primary education is to build a strong foundation for the future. Children need quality teaching, healthy routines and enough time to play and rest. They should not have to carry an excessive physical burden to receive a good education.
It is time for schools and authorities to take this issue seriously. A lighter school bag can help make school life healthier and more comfortable for children. Their well-being must come before unnecessary books and paperwork.
