Editorial | Kashmir’s Growing Screen Addiction

In Kashmir’s homes behind quiet walls and in front of bright smartphone screens, a secret crisis is brewing. Betting sites online disguised as game apps, fantasy leagues, or instant win casinos are quietly consuming the aspirations and money of a whole generation. What started as a harmless rush for some has turned into an addiction epidemic, financial devastation, and radicalisation for others. The worst affected are the young people agitated, ambitious, and susceptible who are being drawn into a maelstrom from which very few emerge unharmed.
In towns and villages across the Valley, teens as young as 16 spend hours stuck to gambling sites. They start with modest bets ₹100 or ₹200 but before long, they are borrowing money from friends, availing loans, or even stealing from homes. A few early wins give them a taste of what seems like “easy money”, but the house always wins in the end. What follows is a dangerous downward spiral: debt, shame, frustration, and isolation.
And now, an even more disturbing trend is emerging. Some of these financially stuck and emotionally shattered kids are being poached by radical elements or hardline advance forces not only because they are desperate, but because they leave a digital footprint behind that allows them to be easily targeted for coercion. A wealth-guarantee app is the door to exploitation.
The Valley has traditionally struggled with intractable political, social, and economic issues. But digital dependency, particularly internet gaming, is a newer threat and one that gets hardly any notice it should. Unlike crime or drugs, online gaming is not visible. There are no clues, no police raids, no blaring sirens. The only warning signs are a taciturn teenage boy at the dinner table, a student missing classes, a pal who borrows but never pays back. And before anyone knows it, they’re caught.
The irony is bitter. For a region hungering for peace and economic respectability, betting apps promise the exact things the youth desire quick money, liberty, fame. But these are fantasies. What they bring instead is a culture of quickness, irresponsibility, and ultimately, destruction. 22-year-old Bilal’s (changed) story is revealing. After being a top student of civil services studies, he lost ₹1.5 lakh on online betting apps in half a year, sold his scooter, quit college, and eventually became a member of an online group luring others. That too isn’t an exception; it is becoming the rule at rapid speed.
The onus of stemming the tide rests on several shoulders. The government has to take the lead. Although the J&K Police have acted against drug networks and hawala-based funding, an equal sense of urgency is required to target and choke unregulated betting sites operating in Kashmir by proxy apps and Telegram channels. Cyber surveillance squads have to be beefed up. App stores require stricter checks, and any app providing gambling-type services has to be geo-blocked in the UT.
At the same time, the Education Ministry and school officials have to come up with awareness campaigns regarding the monetary and mental risks of gambling. As there are drug sessions or cyberbullying sessions, the gambling habit of earning quick money also has to be dealt with openly and time and again. The tragedy is not monetary it’s a mental health epidemic. Depression, suicidal thoughts, and anti-social behaviour are all on the increase among betters.
Parents and community leaders have to be sensitized too. Parents often confuse this practice as “mobile gaming” or “cricket interest” unaware of the serious financial cost involved. Religious leaders who carry deep sway must start talking about this evil in sermons and Friday prayers. Gambling particularly when it translates into financial ruin and social deviance is not merely illegal; it is ethically corrosive.
As important is the media’s role. Glamorizing fantasy sports, linking online wins to celebrity culture, and promoting ads that equate winning with success must cease. These sites spend crores advertising during cricket matches, social media reels, and news platforms. That story luck is the new ticket to success must be met with reality: skill, education, and perseverance are the only sustainable paths to a life of employability and departure from poverty.
Finally, we require hope and options. If young Kashmiris are betting online, it is not only because they are irresponsible it is also because they have limited job opportunities, and entrepreneurship is filled with red tape. We require work schemes that do not remain on paper alone. We require incubation centers in constituencies, harassment-free micro-finance loans, and mentorship in colleges that channel the young towards productive endeavors. Gambling can provide speedy gains, but pride is in sustained development.
Kashmir’s youth are its finest resource. It is an ethical failure and a strategic mistake to let them be devoured by a predatory digital economy that depends on illusory promises. The moment to do something is now. Block the apps, educate the youth, develop alternatives, and save a generation before it falls between our hands.
The price of doing nothing is not only lost funds. It is lost lives, lost futures and potentially, lost peace.
