The safe return of Indian citizens stranded in different parts of the world has rightly remained a priority for the Government of India. Through coordinated evacuation efforts, India has brought home citizens from several countries and difficult situations. However, the concerns of Kashmiri Umrah pilgrims stranded in Saudi Arabia deserve urgent attention and a clear response from the authorities.
Several families in Kashmir are worried about the safety and well-being of their relatives who travelled to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. What was meant to be a peaceful spiritual journey has turned into a period of uncertainty for many pilgrims and their families. The situation has left relatives anxious, with many waiting for information about their safe return.
The Government of India has demonstrated its ability to organise large-scale evacuation operations during difficult circumstances. Indian citizens have been brought home from conflict-affected regions and other challenging situations through diplomatic coordination, special flights and the involvement of Indian missions abroad.
The same spirit of urgency and responsibility must guide efforts to bring back stranded Kashmiri pilgrims.
The Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the Indian Consulate in Jeddah should remain in close contact with the affected pilgrims, travel operators and their families. Authorities must establish the exact number of stranded pilgrims, identify their locations and assess their immediate requirements.
The Jammu and Kashmir Government must also take up the matter with the Centre without delay. A dedicated helpline and regular public updates would help families receive reliable information and reduce unnecessary anxiety.
Pilgrims, many of whom may be elderly, also need proper arrangements for food, accommodation, medical assistance and safe transportation until their return. Their travel documents and other logistical requirements should be addressed on priority.
At a time when families are seeking answers, silence and uncertainty can only deepen their distress. The authorities must communicate clearly and act swiftly.
Performing Umrah is a deeply personal and spiritual journey. Those who travelled with faith and devotion should not feel abandoned when circumstances become difficult.
India has repeatedly shown that it can bring its citizens home from challenging situations. Kashmiri pilgrims deserve the same care, attention and commitment.
Their safe return must now become a priority. The Centre and the J&K Government should work together to ensure that every stranded pilgrim reaches home safely and without further delay.
