The spread of leaf miner disease in apple orchards across Kashmir deserves immediate attention from the authorities. The problem has emerged at a critical time when fruit growers are preparing for harvest and hoping for a stable return after months of hard work.
Apple cultivation remains central to the rural economy of Kashmir. Thousands of families depend on orchards for their livelihood. Any disease that affects the health of apple trees can therefore have consequences far beyond individual farms. If leaf miner infestation is allowed to spread unchecked, growers could face reduced productivity, higher treatment costs and losses in the coming seasons.
The government, particularly the Department of Horticulture, must treat the issue as a matter requiring coordinated action. Field teams should be sent to affected areas to assess the extent of the infestation and guide growers on suitable control measures. Farmers should receive clear and timely information about identification, prevention and treatment of the disease.
Awareness is equally important. Many small and marginal growers may not have access to technical advice or may depend on informal recommendations for pesticide use. This can lead to incorrect treatment, unnecessary expenditure and, in some cases, damage to the orchard ecosystem. Horticulture experts should therefore conduct awareness programmes at the village level and provide practical guidance based on the severity of infestation.
The authorities should also strengthen surveillance across major apple producing areas. Early detection can help prevent the disease from spreading from affected orchards to healthy ones. Regular field inspections during the vulnerable stages of crop development can allow officials to respond before the problem becomes widespread.
There is also a need to ensure that farmers have access to approved and effective plant protection measures. The administration should monitor the availability and quality of recommended products and discourage the use of unverified chemicals. Any control strategy should protect the crop while also considering soil health, beneficial insects and the wider orchard environment.
Research institutions and horticulture experts should work closely with growers to understand the reasons behind the increasing incidence of leaf miner and identify locally suitable management practices. Farmers should not be left to deal with the problem individually.
The government must act before the damage becomes more serious. A timely campaign involving surveillance, expert advice, farmer awareness and scientific management can help contain the disease.
Kashmir’s apple industry cannot afford delayed action. Protecting orchards today means protecting the income and economic security of thousands of farming families tomorrow.
