Kashmir is famous for its beautiful winters. Every year, snowfall covers the mountains and fields, making the region look like a winter wonderland. But in recent years, there has been less snowfall than before. This is creating big problems, especially for farmers.
Snowfall is very important for Kashmir. When snow falls in winter, it melts slowly in summer. This melted snow provides water to rivers, lakes, and underground water sources. Farmers use this water for growing crops.
If there is not enough snowfall, the rivers and lakes get less water. This makes farming difficult because crops need a lot of water to grow properly.
The biggest impact of low snowfall is on farming. Many farmers in Kashmir grow apples, rice, saffron, and vegetables. These crops need plenty of water, especially in summer.
Apples are the most important crop in Kashmir. If there is not enough water, apple trees do not grow well. This results in fewer and smaller apples. Rice farming also suffers because paddy fields need a lot of water. Saffron, which is grown in Pulwama and other areas, also needs proper moisture. Less water means a lower saffron harvest.
Vegetable farming is also affected. Farmers who grow tomatoes, spinach, and other vegetables need regular water for irrigation. Without snowfall, water levels in streams and wells go down, making it hard to water crops.
When snowfall is low, the underground water levels also drop. Many people in Kashmir depend on wells and borewells for drinking water and farming. If there is not enough snow to recharge underground water, these wells start drying up. This can lead to serious water shortages in many villages.
Experts say that climate change is the main reason for less snowfall. The world is getting warmer, and this is changing weather patterns everywhere. Sometimes, Kashmir gets very little snow, and sometimes, it gets sudden heavy snowfall. Both situations create problems for farmers.
The snowfall deficit in Kashmir is a serious issue. If this problem continues, farming will suffer, and many families will face economic losses. It is important to take action now to protect Kashmir’s farming and water resources for the future.
