The drug threat has been gnawing into the very lifeblood of society. Over the last few years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed an alarming surge in drug cases ranging from trafficking to consumption. Worst affected have been the youth, who are driven into a cycle of addiction, indebtedness, and crime. The administration has now made a significant move to strike at the roots of this evil. By tagging the image of drug peddlers, police have delivered a very loud and clear message that crime won’t pay.
This measure has both symbolic and practical importance. Symbolically, it informs the public that the government will not stand by those who profit from poison. Practically, it strikes the peddlers at their most vulnerable point—their illegal assets and profits. Property seizure is much more effective compared to transient arrests. Most traffickers tend to find loopholes for bail or operate from behind the scene. But if their properties are attached, their financial spine weakens.
Drug addiction has been perhaps the most perilous threat to our young generation. More and more youth are becoming victims of drugs, from marijuana to chemicals. Families are destroyed, communities are affected, and lives are lost. In this scenario, the police action has acted as a powerful deterrent. By pursuing the money of the traffickers, the police have not only targeted the culprits but also deterred would-be offenders.
There are some other valuable lessons of this action. First, it reinforces the confidence of citizens in the rule of law. Citizens feel helpless when they see known drug pushers living freely and showing off their wealth. Now, when such forces are divested of illegal assets, common citizens feel restored to confidence in justice. Second, it indicates that policing is transcending traditional means. It is not just about bringing cases and making arrests anymore. Contemporary policing calls for fiscal review, intelligence collection, and the bravery to confront powerful syndicates.
It also has to be highlighted that this measure is not only punitive but also preventive. When drug pushers lose their properties, it deterrs others from following their steps into the business. No one wants to watch years of illicit profits go down the drain in one night. This creates a domino effect throughout the chain, starting from producers to street-level vendors.
The effectiveness of this program, nevertheless, hinges on its continued application. Attaching properties should not be left as a one-time news headline. It should then become a consistent practice, used without fear or favor. Firm follow-up is also necessary. Seized properties should not be able to go back to criminals through loopholes. They should be auctioned or reutilized for public good, for example, rehabilitation centers, schools, or community halls. This would both penalize criminals and benefit society directly.
The government must also support this police initiative with a comprehensive plan. They must launch awareness campaigns in colleges and schools, provide rehabilitation for drug addicts, and work through community policing to shatter the demand side of the drug issue. The police can destroy the supply chain, but the demand must be curtailed by education, counseling, and community inputs.
At the center of this battle is the future of our young. If they are rescued from addiction, society will be healthier, families will be stronger, and progress more lasting. Each addict saved is a life restored, and each peddler sanctioned is a threat eliminated. The attachment of properties is a move that is more than slogans. It is action louder than words.
The war against drugs is not simple. It takes risk, patience, and determination. But the latest action by the police indicates that the war is being waged seriously and resolutely. Citizens need to be behind these efforts, support the police, and refuse to hide the criminals. The cycle of addiction and drug trafficking can be broken together.
By going after the money of drug dealers, the police have gone in the right direction. The outcome will be a secure community and better prospects for our children.
