Editorial | People Before Power

Electricity powers homes, hospitals, schools, and businesses. Life slows when supply fails. In J&K, people often complain about frequent outages and weak infrastructure. Many expect uninterrupted power. Few talk about the basic truth. Reliable electricity needs money. The system survives only when consumers pay their electricity fees on time.
Power generation, transmission, and distribution require heavy investment. Power plants need fuel. Transmission lines need maintenance. Transformers require replacement. Skilled staff must manage the grid day and night. All these services carry a cost. When consumers avoid paying bills, the system loses revenue. That loss weakens the entire electricity network.
J&K faces a serious problem of unpaid electricity dues. Reports from the Power Development Department have often highlighted large outstanding bills. In many areas, households and commercial units continue to use electricity without clearing payments. Some even resort to illegal connections. This practice damages transformers and overloads power lines. It also forces authorities to impose power cuts.
The result affects everyone. Honest consumers who pay their bills suffer the same outages as those who do not. Hospitals face power interruptions. Students struggle to study. Small businesses lose income. Farmers cannot run irrigation pumps regularly. The problem spreads across the entire region.
A stable electricity system depends on financial discipline. Consumers must treat electricity as a paid service, not a free entitlement. Water supply, mobile networks, and internet services require payment. Electricity should follow the same principle. When people pay for power, the department can improve supply, upgrade infrastructure, and reduce outages.
There is clear evidence that payment improves services. Several states in India have taken strict steps to recover electricity dues. These states invested in smart meters and modern transmission systems. Revenue collection improved. Power supply became more stable. Consumers received better service.
J&K has also started reforms. Smart meters are being installed in many areas. These meters help track real time consumption. They reduce power theft. They ensure accurate billing. Most importantly, they encourage responsible usage.
Many consumers initially resisted smart meters. Some feared higher bills. Others worried about strict payment rules. Yet experience in several cities shows a different picture. Smart meters help households monitor their electricity use. Consumers can reduce waste and control costs.
Electricity wastage remains another serious concern. In many households lights and appliances remain on for long hours without need. This habit increases power demand. The system struggles to meet peak load. Responsible consumption can reduce pressure on the grid.
Public awareness also plays a key role. People must understand how electricity reaches their homes. Hydroelectric projects, transmission towers, transformers, and distribution lines form a complex chain. Any disruption in funding slows maintenance and expansion.
Authorities also carry responsibility. Billing systems must remain transparent. Power cuts should follow clear schedules. Complaints must receive quick response. When consumers see fair treatment, they are more willing to cooperate.
Local communities can support the process. Mohalla committees and village representatives can encourage timely payment. Awareness drives can explain the link between revenue and better supply. Schools and colleges can promote energy conservation among young people.
The business sector must also lead by example. Shops, hotels, and commercial establishments consume large amounts of electricity. Timely payment from this sector strengthens the financial base of the power department.
J&K has huge hydroelectric potential. Rivers flowing through the region can generate thousands of megawatts of clean energy. Several projects already supply electricity to the grid. Yet the benefits reach people only when the distribution system remains financially stable.
A reliable electricity system supports economic growth. Industries depend on steady power. Tourism infrastructure needs uninterrupted supply. Hospitals require continuous electricity for critical equipment. Digital services also depend on stable power networks.
Citizens often demand better roads, healthcare, and electricity. Governments plan projects and allocate funds. But public cooperation remains essential. Paying electricity bills is part of that cooperation.
Every consumer must ask a simple question. If electricity improves daily life, should its cost be ignored. The answer is clear. Payment ensures sustainability.
When people pay their electricity fees, they invest in their own comfort and development. Strong revenue allows the department to repair lines, replace damaged transformers, and expand the network.
Reliable electricity does not come from promises alone. It comes from responsibility shared by government and citizens. When both sides fulfill their role, the power system becomes stronger.
The message is simple. Pay electricity fees. Demand better electricity. Both must move together for a brighter future in J&K.
