As Kashmir moves into the depths of winter and temperatures continue to plunge, the implemented power curtailment schedule has once again become a point of discussion across the Valley. Electricity during this season is not merely a convenience, but tied to everyday comfort, safety, and wellbeing. In such conditions, a thoughtfully designed and consistently implemented curtailment plan becomes essential for both the administration and the public. The Power Development Department (PDD) faces real challenges during the winter months. Demand naturally rises, local consumption patterns shift, and the supply system often comes under strain. It is well understood that load management becomes unavoidable under such circumstances. Still, given the nature of Kashmir’s harsh winters, there is a need to ensure that the schedule reflects ground realities and is aligned with the basic requirements of households, particularly the elderly, children, and those with health-related needs. A recalibration does not imply criticism of the department but an acknowledgment that even a well-intentioned schedule may benefit from adjustments that minimise the hardship faced by citizens. Predictability, fairness, and timely communication can greatly reduce inconvenience. Ensuring that announced timings are adhered to, and any unavoidable deviations are promptly conveyed, would help improve coordination and build trust. However, the responsibility for maintaining grid stability does not lie with the authorities alone. Public cooperation is an equally important pillar. Unregulated use of high-load heating devices, illegal hooking, and avoidable consumption during peak hours add significant pressure to an already stretched system. Small changes, such as using energy-efficient appliances, adopting safe heating alternatives, and avoiding unnecessary load, can collectively bring about meaningful relief. Kashmir’s winter challenges demand a shared approach. The PDD’s efforts to distribute limited power judiciously, coupled with responsible usage by the public, can create a more balanced and sustainable model of energy management. With thoughtful coordination and mutual understanding, the Valley can navigate the cold months with reduced disruption and greater resilience.
