With the arrival of summer in J&K, streams, rivers and canals once again begin attracting children from villages and towns. Many see these water bodies as a place for relief from heat, fun with friends, or adventure during school vacations. Yet every year, several families suffer painful losses after children drown while swimming in unsafe waters.
These incidents are not rare accidents anymore. They have become a serious social concern that demands attention from parents, teachers, local authorities and the community.
Children often do not understand the dangers hidden beneath flowing water. A canal may appear calm from the surface, but strong currents can pull a child within seconds. Streams in hilly areas may suddenly deepen. Slippery stones, muddy beds and unexpected water pressure make rescue extremely difficult. Even children who know basic swimming can lose control in such conditions.
In many areas of J&K, especially rural regions, children spend long hours outdoors during summer vacations. Some visit canals after playing cricket. Others go to nearby streams with friends without informing parents. Many times, families come to know about the incident only after it is too late.
Every drowning leaves behind a devastated family. Parents who send their children out for play never imagine they may not return home alive. Villages fall silent after such tragedies. Friends carry painful memories for years. The emotional damage cannot be measured.
Most drowning incidents happen because safety is ignored at the beginning. Children are often allowed to move freely near dangerous water bodies without supervision. In some places, canals remain open without warning boards, fencing or safety arrangements. There are areas where deep streams pass close to residential localities and schools, yet no preventive steps exist.
Summer awareness must become a priority across J&K.
Parents have the biggest responsibility in preventing these tragedies. Children should clearly be told not to swim in canals, streams, ponds or rivers without adult supervision. Families must know where their children spend time during afternoons. Young children especially should never be allowed near flowing water alone.
Many parents assume their child knows how to swim and can manage safely. This belief can prove deadly. Natural water bodies are completely different from controlled swimming pools. Fast currents and sudden depth changes can overpower anyone.
Schools also have an important role. Before summer vacations begin, educational institutions should conduct awareness sessions about water safety. Teachers can explain the risks in simple language. Students should be shown real examples of how quickly accidents happen. A strong message delivered in classrooms can save lives outside school.
Local administrations must also act responsibly. Warning signboards should be installed near dangerous canals and streams. High risk areas need fencing wherever possible. Villages with repeated drowning incidents should receive special monitoring during summer months. Rescue teams and emergency contacts must remain active in vulnerable areas.
Religious leaders, social workers and local volunteers can support awareness campaigns as well. Friday sermons, village meetings and community gatherings can spread important safety messages. Sometimes children listen more carefully when the warning comes from respected voices around them.
Social media should also be used positively. Instead of sharing tragedy videos after incidents occur, people should circulate preventive messages before accidents happen. One awareness video shared at the right time may protect a child’s life.
Another concern is the growing habit of children recording videos or taking photos near rivers and streams. Many youngsters move close to dangerous edges for social media content. This trend increases risk further. Parents must guide children about responsible behaviour online and offline.
Government departments dealing with irrigation and water management should inspect unsafe canal spots regularly. In some areas, barriers are damaged or missing entirely. Repairs must not wait until another tragedy occurs.
Communities must stop treating drownings as unavoidable fate. Most of these incidents can be prevented through caution, awareness and supervision. A child’s life is too precious to lose because of one careless moment.
Summer should bring happiness, vacations and family memories. It should not become a season of funerals and grief.
Every parent in J&K should have one honest conversation with their children this summer. Tell them clearly that streams and canals are not playgrounds. Explain that one wrong step can end a life within moments. Children may not understand the danger fully today, but repeated guidance can protect them tomorrow.
The responsibility belongs to everyone. Parents must supervise. Schools must educate. Authorities must secure dangerous areas. Society must raise awareness.
A few minutes of care can prevent lifelong regret.
No family should have to carry the pain of losing a child to unsafe waters.
