To thrive in today’s rapidly changing economy, India needs to cultivate a culture of innovation from a young age. Our innovation policies must prioritize fostering “out-of-the-box” thinking within the education system. This requires a shift away from rote learning and towards developing strong cognitive abilities.
As we celebrated National Science Day, it’s imperative to reflect on how science, technology, and innovation can continue to propel Kashmir’s scientific journey forward. Kashmir possesses a unique blend of natural beauty and intellectual fervor, making it a fertile ground for scientific exploration and discovery. Our nation – India has a long and glorious tradition of scientific enquiry. From ancient times to the medieval era and then the modern period, this land has been home to exceptional minds who have pushed the frontiers of human knowledge. Their works form a rich treasure of our scientific and cultural heritage. Since Independence, India has placed special emphasis on promotion of scientific temper. Our Constitution itself has enshrined this attitude as a fundamental duty. Article 51A(h), among a number of articles listing the fundamental duties of Indian citizens, says “It shall be the duty of every citizen of India to develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform.”
The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Is notably lacking in terms of the quality and extent of scientific research. One of the main shortcomings can be attributed to the way science is taught in our academic establishments. Unfortunately, science is frequently viewed as a routine subject similar to languages, focusing more on memorization rather than encouraging analytical thinking and hands-on application.
The lack of focus on practical scientific education has hindered the development of a scientific mindset among students, ultimately impeding our country’s progress as an innovation center. The current educational system continues to prioritize theoretical learning, leaving little room for students to explore and cultivate their scientific curiosity. Science and technology have always been instrumental in addressing the region’s challenges, from enhancing agricultural productivity to mitigating the impact of natural disasters. However, sustaining Kashmir’s scientific momentum requires concerted efforts across various fronts . First and foremost, Investing in scientific infrastructure is of utmost importance. From research laboratories to technology parks, having adequate facilities is crucial to promote innovation and support cutting-edge research. By upgrading current infrastructure and building new facilities, Kashmir can attract top talent and drive scientific progress. Moreover, enhancing science education is essential for cultivating the future generation of scientists and innovators. Through updating curricula, encouraging hands-on learning experiences, and offering scholarships and fellowships, Kashmir can motivate young individuals to pursue careers in STEM fields. Furthermore, creating mentorship programs and collaborating with prominent academic institutions can introduce students to practical scientific challenges and possibilities.
Embracing emerging technologies is another key aspect of sustaining Kashmir’s scientific journey. From artificial intelligence and machine learning to biotechnology and renewable energy, incorporating cutting-edge technologies into research and development efforts can unlock new possibilities and address pressing societal needs. By fostering an environment that embraces innovation and experimentation, Kashmir can position itself at the forefront of technological advancement. Furthermore, promoting entrepreneurship and supporting startups is essential for translating scientific discoveries into tangible solutions and products. By providing incubation centers, funding opportunities, and regulatory support, Kashmir can empower aspiring entrepreneurs to commercialize their innovations and contribute to economic growth while addressing local and global challenges. The govt of UT has taken many innitiatives in this regard.
Initiatives like Atal Innovation Mission play a crucial role in fostering scientific research and innovation in India. Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) is Government of India’s flagship initiative to create and promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across the length and breadth of our country. AIM’s objective is to develop new programmes and policies for fostering innovation in different sectors of the economy, provide platforms and collaboration opportunities for different stakeholders, and create an umbrella structure to oversee the innovation & entrepreneurship ecosystem of the country. From understanding why the sky is blue to the purification of our drinking water, we interact with the life sciences on a daily basis — making it essential to encourage the study of the subject. “We are all born basic scientists. Fundamental inquiry is important, because that’s what makes us human. how can we make life sciences an appealing field to researchers? This all was discussed in a diary ever science and society symposium in Delhi . The panelists recommended inter-disciplinary research and increased use of technology, while encouraging and fostering curiosity of the life sciences among primary school students. An article published in the Hindustan Times mentions , The most important role for our scientists today is in the training of the next generation to make critical thinking second nature and research commonplace. Our best science and technology research environments cater to less than 5% of our students. Quality research, driven by the search for knowledge understanding, must also be done in our state universities, which cater to 95% of our students, and where first generation students enter in the millions. Tomorrow’s global elite will have the exploitative power, not only from material resources, but mainly from the ability to use data. A poorly educated workforce will make India a vassal state, with our rich data parked elsewhere and our population impoverished by the lack of understanding and control over its use. Mathematics, statistics and data science, along with computer science, need to be added to foundational skilling, through language-neutral teaching material accessible in quality across our geographies
It’s essential for the government to prioritize and support such initiatives to drive technological advancement and economic growth. Promoting scientific research and innovation initiatives such as national innovation Foundation NIF , SERB, various programs of DST etc in Kashmir can indeed have numerous benefits, including economic development, job creation, and fostering a culture of entrepreneurship.
Measures to enhance scientific research in India:
Investment in Science and Technology: The path towards advancing scientific research in India lies in investing in science to establish a sustainable research culture. To foster the growth of scientific research in the country, it is crucial to concentrate on creating opportunities in science and technology. Forumias.com mentions that these are measures to enhance scientific research in india .
Fundamental Scientific Research: Emphasis should be placed on interdisciplinary research and the increased utilization of technology. Endeavors should be made to stimulate and nurture the curiosity of primary school students towards life sciences. Steps should also be taken to enhance mathematical and cognitive skills at the school level. Establishing a connection between national laboratories and universities will enable research and development to commence from the very foundation.
Enhancement of STEM Education in Schools: The current approaches employed to impart science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in Indian schools have proven to be both inefficient and ineffective. By promoting problem-solving and critical thinking through STEM education, students will be better equipped for future careers. Consequently, this new approach will cultivate an entrepreneurial ecosystem in India that encourages the creation of jobs rather than job seekers.
Funding: The immediate priority in this regard should be to augment government funding in higher education and research and development. The private sector should be encouraged to prioritize research and development and allocate corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds towards it.
Change in Approach: India must intensify its efforts to enhance science and research and development in the country. Adopting a more mission-driven approach in areas such as dark matter, genomics, energy, agriculture, and mathematics is imperative. Simultaneously, concerted efforts should be directed towards improving the “ease of doing science” index, akin to the focus on improving the “ease of doing business” index.
In conclusion, sustaining Kashmir’s scientific journey requires a multi-faceted approach that encompasses infrastructure development, education reform, collaboration, technology adoption, and entrepreneurship promotion. By investing in these areas and nurturing a culture of scientific inquiry, Kashmir can continue to thrive as a hub of innovation and discovery, enriching the lives of its inhabitants and contributing to the advancement of society at large. As we celebrated National Science Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to unleashing the full potential of science, technology, and innovation to build a brighter future for Kashmir and beyond.
