The list of atrocities conducted by Pakistan Army upon its people is very long. In entire Pakistan the people have suffered badly through the hands of its Army but in this topic lets discuss the role of Pakistan Army upon Baloch people. Balochistan has long been plagued by a complex web of challenges and conflicts. From political instability to human rights violations, the region has faced numerous difficulties that have impacted its people and hindered its development. Before joining Pakistan in 1947, Balochistan comprised four princely states: Makran, Las Bela, Kharan, and Kalat. While three of these states willingly joined Pakistan, Kalat aspired for independence under the leadership of Khan of Kalat, Ahmed Yaar Khan. However, with persuasion from Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, Khan of Kalat eventually joined Pakistan in March 1948. The aspirations of the people of Balochistan for greater control over their natural resources and political autonomy have been a recurring theme since then, leading to various nationalist movements. One of the most significant concerns in Balochistan is the issue of enforced disappearances. Activists, journalists, and intellectuals have been reported missing, allegedly abducted by security forces or intelligence agencies. Human rights organizations have documented numerous cases, calling for investigations and accountability. Extrajudicial killings have also been reported, involving the targeting of suspected militants or individuals associated with separatist movements. These incidents have raised serious concerns about human rights abuses in the region.
Balochistan has experienced restrictions on freedom of expression and press freedom. Journalists and media personnel face intimidation, harassment, and violence, which hampers their ability to report independently on the situation in the region. Torture and arbitrary detentions have also been alleged, with both security forces and militant groups being accused of subjecting individuals to torture during interrogations or custody. The conditions of detention facilities have also been a matter of concern, further exacerbating the human rights situation in Balochistan. The ongoing conflict in Balochistan has resulted in the displacement of a significant number of civilians. Military operations, clashes between security forces and armed groups, and attacks on civilian populations have all contributed to this displacement. The impact on the lives and livelihoods of the affected population has been immense, exacerbating the already challenging socio-economic conditions in the region. Balochistan has witnessed political instability and polarization, with frequent changes in governments and infighting among political factions. The struggle for power between different political parties and the military has further destabilized the region. The incumbent government has faced opposition movements led by Imran Khan, who has organized protests and rallies across the country. The political landscape in Balochistan remains uncertain, with upcoming elections and the need for stability and effective governance.
The economic situation in Balochistan is precarious, with high levels of inflation, a depreciating currency, and limited foreign reserves. The province is rich in natural resources such as natural gas, oil, coal, copper, and gold, but the exploitation of these resources has not translated into economic prosperity for the population. The lack of infrastructure development and limited job opportunities have contributed to widespread poverty and economic disparities. The government’s efforts to address these challenges have been hampered by political instability and the ongoing conflict in the region. Balochistan has been severely affected by recurring floods, which have caused widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure, and agricultural land. The government, in collaboration with international partners, has initiated efforts to recover and rebuild the affected areas. However, the process has been slow and challenging, with limited resources and the need for sustainable long-term solutions. The displacement of people and the loss of livelihoods have further compounded the difficulties faced by the affected communities. Balochistan has been grappling with mounting insecurity, with various extremist groups operating in the region. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its factions have carried out attacks targeting security forces and civilians. The presence of the Islamic State-Khorasan Province (ISKP) has also posed a significant threat, with the group targeting minority communities and religious sites. The porous border with Afghanistan has allowed these groups to find safe havens and launch attacks, further complicating the security situation in Balochistan.
The complex dynamics of civil-military relations in Pakistan have had a significant impact on the situation in Balochistan. The military has played a prominent role in the governance and security of the region, often overshadowing civilian institutions. The role of the military in addressing the challenges in Balochistan, including human rights abuses and extremist threats, is a contentious issue. Balancing the need for security with respect for human rights and the aspirations of the local population remains a critical challenge for Pakistan. Balochistan faces a multitude of challenges, including human rights violations, political instability, economic disparities, and security threats. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that prioritizes the rights and aspirations of the people of Balochistan while ensuring stability and development in the region. The government of Pakistan must take proactive measures to address the grievances of the Baloch people, promote dialogue and reconciliation, and work towards a more inclusive and prosperous future for Balochistan. In case Pakistan fails to deliver justice to the people of Balochistan, then it should end its occupation from the region.
