The Indian education system has been a topic of discussion and reform for decades, and rightfully so. With its roots deeply embedded in a system designed by colonial powers, it has long required a revamp to cater to the needs of a dynamic and evolving society. Over the past two decades, as a part of the CBSE system, I have witnessed several innovative changes that brought a glimmer of hope—only to fade away with time. From the introduction of National Curriculum Frameworks (NCFs) to the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system, formative and summative assessments, and even the open textbook exams, each reform carried the promise of change but lacked permanence and sustainability.

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, however, stands as a potential game-changer. A concise 64-page document, NEP 2020, sets the vision for an education system that aligns with the needs of the 21st century. The government has given the country a decade-long timeline for its implementation—a thoughtful approach to ensure careful and inclusive adoption. But the question remains: will this be the milestone that truly transforms education in India, or will it become another fleeting reform?
The Challenges in Jammu & Kashmir:
One of the glaring gaps in our education system, particularly in regions like Jammu and Kashmir, is the lack of focus on skill-based education. Despite producing a large number of graduates, postgraduates, and even PhDs, there is a significant dearth of technical knowledge and practical skills among the youth. The emphasis on rote learning and theoretical excellence has overshadowed the need for skills that can bridge the gap between education and employability.
Education should not merely be a journey of acquiring degrees; it should be about nurturing innovation, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. In my experience as a CBSE Resource Person conducting training programs across India, I have observed the urgent need for mass training initiatives that equip educators with the tools to adopt experiential, skill-based teaching methodologies. The traditional pen-and-paper exam system must be replaced with assessments that measure a child’s understanding, creativity, and ability to apply knowledge in real-life situations.
Learning Without Burden:
The concept of “learning without burden” has been a long-standing ideal in education, yet it often remains confined to policy discussions and textbooks. True learning happens when children are curious, engaged, and inspired. Burdened with heavy syllabi and outdated evaluation methods, our students often miss out on the joy of learning.
The NEP 2020 provides a roadmap to address these issues. By emphasizing experiential learning, vocational education, and multidisciplinary approaches, it has the potential to revolutionize the way we teach and learn. However, its success depends on effective implementation at the grassroots level. Teachers must be empowered with ongoing professional development, schools must be equipped with infrastructure for vocational and skill-based education, and communities must be engaged to shift societal mindsets around education and employment.
The Way Forward:
As educators, policymakers, and stakeholders, we have a collective responsibility to ensure that wisdom prevails over inertia. The future of education in India cannot be limited to producing graduates; it must be about nurturing individuals who are equipped to contribute meaningfully to society.
Here are a few steps we can take to align with the vision of NEP 2020:
1. Mass Training for Educators: Large-scale teacher training programs should be conducted to familiarize educators with new pedagogical techniques, assessment models, and the integration of technology in classrooms.
2. Skill-Based Curriculum: The curriculum must be restructured to include skill development from an early age, focusing on practical applications and hands-on learning.
3. Community Involvement: Parents and communities must be sensitized about the importance of skill-based education and the shift from traditional exam-oriented learning to holistic development.
4. Technological Integration: Digital tools and e-learning platforms should be leveraged to make education accessible and engaging, particularly in remote areas like Jammu and Kashmir.
5. Student-Centered Learning: The education system must prioritize the interests, talents, and aspirations of students, enabling them to pursue diverse career paths without societal pressure.
