Ex-militant turned Army soldier won Ashoka Chakra and became the first in the history of Kashmir.
Different people Have different dreams, and most of these dreams revolve around self-progress and self-reliance. However, there are some who sacrifice their lives for the nation and make history for others. This is what Kashmir must be proud of: Nazir Ahmad, an ex-militant turned Amry soldier, made this sacrifice in an encounter, unaware of its outcome. Nazir, a soldier from this land, made a significant difference. Unlike Burhan Wani a terrorist who killed innocent people and died a coward’s death, Nazir Wani fought with courage and left the path of violence and terrorism and made Kashmiri people proud and become the first to receive the Ashok Chakra, creating history.
Nazir Wani, L/Nk of 163 Inf BN TA, is an example for others who never accepted defeat and fought till the last breath. Nazir, who was radicalized like other youth in Kashmir, left the path of violence, started a new life with new hope, got recruited into the Indian Army as a soldier, and became a star of the nation, being the only one to receive the Ashok Chakra.
Here, we need to assess the institutionalization within the Indian system. An infiltrated militant was given a chance to join the Indian Army and was given all the opportunities to serve his nation, proving himself to be the best citizen of this nation. Such examples cannot be found in our neighbouring country, which is actually involved in the radicalization of youth.
Nazir Ahmad Wani’s story is a remarkable and inspiring one, showcasing transformation, bravery, and dedication. It was also the initiative of the government to rehabilitate those militants who had surrendered and joined the mainstream. Nazir was initially associated with militancy and part of the insurgency. The turning point in his life led to a significant contribution to the nation. Nazir Wani abandoned militancy and joined the Indian Army. His transformation from a militant to a soldier is a powerful narrative of change and redemption. Wani was involved in numerous counter-insurgency operations, displaying exceptional bravery and commitment. His knowledge of local terrain and insurgent tactics was invaluable to the army.
Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military decoration, for his acts of valour. He stands among the few soldiers who have received this prestigious honour. The citation for his award highlighted his extraordinary bravery during a counter-terrorism operation in Hirapur village in Pulwama district on November 25, 2018. Leading his team, Wani eliminated two terrorists despite sustaining severe injuries.
Wani’s story is a remarkable example of courage and transformation. His journey from a militant to a decorated soldier is a testament to the potential for change and the power of dedication to a noble cause. His legacy serves as a beacon of hope and a powerful narrative of redemption.
There can be various suggestion from Nazir’s inspirational story to Ex-militant and active militant in Kashmir. Nazir’s journey illustrates that it is possible to leave behind a life of violence and contribute positively to society.
The government and non-governmental organizations can conduct awareness campaigns highlighting Nazir Wani’s story to inspire active militants to surrender and reintegrate into society. Establish rehabilitation programs that showcase success stories like that of Wani, emphasizing the benefits of choosing a path of peace and service over violence. Create mentorship programs where reformed militants who have successfully integrated back into society, like Wani, can guide and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
To facilitate the reintegration of ex-militants into society, the government can implement several measures under Comprehensive Rehabilitation Programs. Develop programs that provide psychological counselling, vocational training, and educational opportunities to help ex-militants build a new life. Create job opportunities and incentivize businesses to hire ex-militants, helping them achieve financial independence and stability. Encourage community-based initiatives that foster acceptance and support for reformed militants, reducing stigma and promoting social cohesion.
Ensure the safety of reformed militants by providing necessary security arrangements to protect them from potential threats from former militant groups. Establish monitoring systems to track the progress of reformed militants and provide ongoing support to address any challenges they may face during their reintegration process.
Recommendations: Adaptation of Mainstream Integration Policy: The Jammu and Kashmir government should adopt a policy for surrendered militants that ensures their absorption into mainstream society. This policy should include: Structured Surrender Programs: Develop clear guidelines and structured programs for militants who wish to surrender, providing them with a clear path to reintegration. Inspirational stories like that of Nazir Ahmad Wani should be widely publicized and celebrated. Specific days could be designated to honor these individuals and their journeys of transformation.
Implement dedicated support systems that offer continuous assistance to surrendered militants, helping them navigate the challenges of reintegration.
Ex-militants themselves can take several steps to ensure successful reintegration and contribute positively to society. Actively participate in rehabilitation programs to acquire new skills and knowledge that will help in building a better future. Utilize the skills gained through vocational training to secure employment and achieve financial independence. Engage with the community by participating in local activities and initiatives, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance. Share personal experiences and success stories with active militants and other ex-militants, serving as a role model and mentor. Pursue further education and skill development opportunities to enhance personal growth and career prospects.
The story of Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani serves as a beacon of hope and a powerful example of how a life of violence can be transformed into one of service and honor. By drawing inspiration from his journey, implementing comprehensive rehabilitation programs, and creating supportive environments, both the government and ex-militants can work together to foster peace and prosperity in Kashmir. The active involvement and commitment of all stakeholders are crucial in building a brighter and more harmonious future for the region.
