Nestled in the foothills of the Pir Panchal range and cradled by the Waltangu Nard, Vasak Nag is a spring like no other. Flowing for six months before disappearing mysteriously for the remainder of the year, this natural wonder in the Kund area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district has intrigued locals and visitors alike.
Each year, around the 15th of April, the spring reappears with great anticipation and local fanfare, only to dry up again by the 15th of September. Whether a geographical marvel or of spiritual significance, the spring’s seasonal cycle has deep roots in local folklore. The people of Kund Valley believe that Vasak Nag is connected to a revered Sufi saint, Syed Noor Shah Wali Baghdadi (RA), further deepening its mystique.
A week before its waters begin to flow, the area is often met with strong winds, rain, and thunderstorms, a natural phenomenon locals interpret as a sign that “Vasak Nag is coming.” When it finally emerges, the stream gushes forth, irrigating vast stretches of farmland. Its waters power five traditional water mills and flow between lush willow orchards. Many local residents depend on the spring for drinking, bathing, and irrigation.
Located just 20 kilometers from Kulgam, the journey to Vasak Nag offers breathtaking views, making it a popular destination for both off-road and on-road hikers. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a small park and a tourist cafeteria, ideal for relaxation. A quaint masjid, perched on the bank of the spring, offers space for just five devotees, enhancing the serene atmosphere.
The spring itself spans about 20 feet in width with a depth of 4 feet. Its water is frigid—so cold, in fact, that it’s difficult to keep a hand submerged for more than a few minutes. Due to these icy temperatures, no aquatic life can survive in the spring, making it one of the few in the valley devoid of fish. However, the water is remarkably pure and ideal for drinking.
Surrounded by lush flora and fauna, the area around Vasak Nag is a haven for nature lovers. For those eager to explore this unique wonder, Vasak Nag is a mere 18 kilometers from Kulgam town, situated in the scenic Kund Valley.
