Srinagar : Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir took a major step towards strengthening agricultural extension services by inaugurating a series of farmer-focused facilities at its Directorate of Extension.
The initiatives were formally launched by Vice Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, who unveiled the e-Plant Health Clinic, Farmer School Centre, Agri-Clinic & Agri Business Centre, and the newly established Directorate of SAMETI Hall in the presence of senior university officials, scientists, and faculty members.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Ganai described the e-Plant Health Clinic as a transformative, technology-driven platform aimed at delivering real-time and accurate diagnosis of crop-related issues. He said the system would enable early detection of pests and diseases, ensure timely intervention, and reduce crop losses, ultimately improving farm productivity. He also emphasized that such digital tools would promote scientific crop management and encourage the judicious use of agrochemicals, contributing to environmentally sustainable agriculture.
Highlighting the importance of digital integration in extension services, the Vice Chancellor noted that these initiatives would bridge the gap between laboratory research and field-level application. He added that the e-Plant Clinic would act as a crucial interface connecting farmers with experts, making advisory services more accessible, efficient, and responsive.
The event was attended by several senior officials, including Prof. Haroon Rashid Naik, Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth, Prof. Mohammad Altaf Bhat, Prof. Azmat Alam Khan, Prof. Riaz Ahmad Shah, and Prof. Shakeel Ahmad Mir, who attended as Guests of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth underscored that the newly established facilities would significantly enhance extension services through capacity building, early disease diagnosis, promotion of agri-entrepreneurship, and skill development. She added that the Agri-Business Incubation Centre would support emerging startups, while the Farmer School Centre would provide hands-on training to farmers.
The inauguration marks a significant milestone in SKUAST-K’s ongoing efforts to transform agriculture in Jammu & Kashmir into a technology-driven, sustainable, and economically viable sector, with a strong focus on farmer welfare and innovation-led growth.
