Kupwara : A social audit of the ICDS Project Kupwara under the Poshan sector was conducted on Saturday on the directions of the Deputy Commissioner Kupwara. The audit took place at the ICDS Centre Pazipora and covered services in Deedikut, Karihama, and A and B areas.
The exercise was held under the supervision of an audit officer from the CA and PD department. Officials from concerned departments, the ICDS supervisor, sarpanchs, lumberdars, and local residents participated. Around 300 men and women attended and shared feedback.
People were encouraged to speak openly about ICDS centres and staff performance. Locals appreciated ICDS supervisor Raja Amin and her team. They said children were receiving proper nutrition and preschool education. Beneficiaries expressed satisfaction with services under the Poshan scheme.
The audit team examined all official records in detail. Several ICDS centres across three panchayats were also visited to verify ground level work. Documentation and field functioning were found satisfactory. The audit officer praised the overall performance of the project and staff.
During interactions, ICDS helpers raised issues about non payment of fuel charges used for cooking meals under the Supplementary Nutrition Programme. They also flagged problems related to freight charges for lifting rice and electricity bills for operating heat pillars. The helpers urged early resolution of these issues.
Local participants welcomed the social audit and called it an important step to ensure proper delivery of government schemes. A numberdar confirmed that nutrition and preschool services were being provided regularly.
However, workers pointed out a lack of public support. Many parents were not sending children to the centres despite the availability of balanced diets. Workers said they often had to personally bring children to the centres.
Anganwadi workers and helpers were praised for their dedication and timely services. Representatives from panchayats including Pazipora, Doodikoot, Pushwari, and Karihama said there were no complaints about ICDS functioning.
Officials said social audits are being conducted across 11 ICDS projects in Kupwara district. The process includes interaction with locals, former sarpanchs, and lumberdars to assess services for children aged zero to six years and for pregnant and nursing women. Overall satisfaction was expressed with the functioning of ICDS centres.
