JAMMU : The Traffic Police J&K, under the directions of the Inspector General of Traffic Police- J&K, have initiated an intensive enforcement drive against the illegal use of pressure horns across the Union Territory.
In a handout issued on sunday, the Traffic Police reiterated that Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, in its directions dated 10.12.2013 in SLP No. (C) 25237/2010 titled Abhay Singh VS State of Uttar Pradesh & Ors., has banned the use of all types of pressure horns. Further, the use of such horns constitutes an offence under Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which may attract a fine up to ₹10,000/- and imprisonment up to six months.
“Despite clear legal provisions, it has been observed that pressure horns, including air pressure horns, multi-toned horns, hooters, trumpets and other non-compliant sound devices, are still being used in vehicles, causing serious public nuisance, noise pollution and inconvenience to the general public,” the Traffic police stated.
Taking serious note of the violation, all motorists have been strictly advised to -Refrain from using pressure horns or any unauthorized sound-producing devices; Ensure immediate removal of such devices from their vehicles; Comply with provisions of Rule 119 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989.
Traffic Police Units across J&K have been directed to intensify checking drives and take strict legal action against violators. Special focus will be laid on identified congestion points, highways and urban areas to curb this menace effectively.
The general public is also requested to cooperate with Traffic Police and report violations to the nearest Traffic Control Unit on the following contact numbers: TCU Jammu: 9419147732, TCU Raman: 9419993745, TPCR Srinagar:9469807526.
