CHENNAI: The Tamila Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is inching closer to the majority mark in Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, delivering a stunning debut performance that has disrupted the state’s long-standing political landscape.
According to trends from the Election Commission of India, TVK was leading in 107 seats after 10 rounds of counting, approaching the halfway mark of 117 required to form the government.
The strong showing by TVK has dealt a major blow to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which was aiming for another term, while also challenging the dominance of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. The two parties have alternated in power in the state for decades.
Party chief Vijay was leading from Tiruchirappalli (East) by over 6,000 votes and from Perambur by more than 10,000 votes against DMK candidates.
Celebrations broke out at Vijay’s residence and outside the party headquarters in Chennai, where supporters gathered in large numbers, waving flags and distributing sweets. Family members, including his father S A Chandrasekar, were seen celebrating the party’s performance.
TVK national spokesperson Felix Gerald expressed confidence in forming the government independently, stating that the mandate reflects a rejection of corruption, nepotism, and dynasty politics.
Meanwhile, the AIADMK was leading in 64 constituencies, while the DMK was ahead in 44 seats. Smaller parties such as the Pattali Makkal Katchi, Indian National Congress, and Bharatiya Janata Party were leading in a handful of seats.
Security was tightened around Vijay’s residence as senior police officials deployed additional personnel amid celebrations.
Counting began at 8 am, and final results are awaited, but early trends indicate a potential political shift in Tamil Nadu with TVK emerging as a dominant force.(Agencies)
