For several decades, Kashmir has been represented mostly through the prism of conflict. Even as such representations are grounded in realities, they have come to eclipse the quiet but significant change that is taking root within the communities. In contemporary Kashmir, a different narrative is slowly being written, one that is being forged by families, elders, women, and youth who are actively choosing peace, dignity, and service.
The core of this change consists of moments that cannot be measured by statistics, moments filled with emotions that are extremely human and are reflective of a larger transformation. Such a moment occurred at a Territorial Army recruitment rally at Kupwara, which left an indelible mark on all who were present.
Another incident from Kupwara, where a father’s hands rose in a silent prayer to heaven as his son sailed through the TA recruitment rally. The father’s eyes were full of tears, his heart overflowing with pride. In a shaky voice, he appealed to his son, “Asif, kar jaldi” a phrase that epitomised the sacrifice of patience that had been exercised over the years.
This is the essence of the new Kashmir. Families are now a formidable force against the force of radicalization, bringing up their children on the ideals of education, responsibility, and righteous service. Parents now pray for progress, for stability, for honour on behalf of their children. This boosts resistance and closes the space where militant ideologies thrived.
The youths are at the focal point of this change in society. Involvement in recruitment rallies, skill development programs, sports, and educational institutions is on the increase. Such decisions reflect a commitment to a life grounded in merit, hard work, and giving back. For many youths in Kashmir, Service has become a means of living with dignity and self-respect.
Another touching scene from the rally further reinforced this shift. The younger brother burst into tears as his elder brother cleared the recruitment process. The tears expressed pride, relief, and a sense of improvement that can be brought with dedication and discipline, resulting in a brighter future.
The presence of women at the rally for the recruitment of TAs brought a significant element to this change. Women lined up, cheering on the men who would protect the country in the future, voices ringing out in support. This is significant because, as a society, women have been known to bear the emotional toll of war, and the presence of these women at this rally is a significant commitment to peace.
The sense of community is beautifully illustrated by an incident in Panzgam, where an elderly lady was seen distributing food to the candidates at a Territorial Army recruitment rally in Kupwara. The lady with utmost care is giving people food as a blessing, a gesture that is a paradigm of Kashmiri motherly care, forever full of warmth, affection, and kindness.
It is precisely such acts of encouragement, care, and collective belief that form the foundation of community-driven peace initiatives. When communities are isolated and a sense of hopelessness prevails radicalization can take root. The youth, when brought together to be fed, led, and reassured, find extremist ideologies less appealing. The recruitment rally becomes more than an event, it is a powerful gesture of unity.
In addition to such rallies, other initiatives within the Kashmir valley are helping to instill peace in the region. Educational programs, vocational training, sports, and youth mentorship programs are providing constructive engagement opportunities. Civil society, educational institutions, and other community leaders are collectively working towards coexistence, dialogue, and citizen responsibility, which are aimed at addressing social and economic factors that make such communities vulnerable to radicalization.
There is a marked shift in the way the uniform is viewed. For many Kashmiri youths, the uniform has come to be identified with discipline, potential, and service. It is a welcome future that is grounded in application and integrity.
Kashmir is experiencing a peace that is emerging from collective choice. Families, women, the elderly, and youth are changing societal values in favour of peace, progress, and stability. The emotionally charged footage from Kupwara and Panzgam indicates that peace is nurtured by communities that are richer in empathy, trust, and shared responsibility.
In Kashmir, counter-radicalization requires a peace-building approach centered on communities. The tears of a father, the support of women, the blessings of an elderly lady, and the determination of young hopefuls sum up a reality that is far more profound. It is a matter of hope rather than fear, service rather than violence, and pride in the uniform.
These are the signs of a larger shift taking place within the region. Kashmir is slowly developing a future centered on dignity, opportunity, and collective determination. Grassroots peace movements have remained one of the most potent factors actively resisting radicalization within the region.
