Childbirth is one of the most important moments in a woman’s life. Hospitals have a duty to make it as safe as possible. But concerns are growing over the increasing use of lower segment caesarean sections, commonly called LSCS, in Kashmir.
A caesarean section can save the life of a mother or baby when there is a medical need. But it is major surgery and should not be the first option when a safe normal delivery is possible.
At the same time, episiotomy should be properly understood. It is a small surgical cut made during some vaginal deliveries to help the baby come out. Doctors do not recommend routine episiotomy for every woman. It should be used only when medically required.
The concern is whether hospitals are giving women proper choices and explanations before deciding on LSCS.
A woman should know why a caesarean is being recommended. Doctors should clearly explain the condition, the risks and whether a normal delivery is still possible. The final decision should be based on the safety of both mother and baby.
Hospitals also need to look at their caesarean rates. If LSCS numbers are increasing, hospital authorities should review the reasons. Are these surgeries medically necessary? Are women reaching hospitals late? Are doctors and patients discussing all suitable options? Are hospital staff following proper guidelines?
These questions need honest answers. There is also a need to avoid blaming women who undergo caesarean deliveries. Sometimes LSCS is the safest option. A mother should never be pressured to choose a normal delivery when surgery is medically necessary.
The focus should be on reducing unnecessary caesarean surgeries while ensuring that women who genuinely need LSCS receive it without delay.
Hospitals must do their role properly. They must provide safe maternity care, explain the available options and follow accepted medical guidelines.
Kashmiri women deserve care that is safe, respectful and based on medical need. Childbirth should not become a matter of convenience for the hospital. The health and safety of the mother and baby must come first.
