A good school does not stand on tall buildings or attractive uniforms. It stands on the shoulders of dedicated teachers who spend long hours shaping young minds. Across the country, thousands of private school teachers report to work every morning with commitment and hope. They prepare lessons, correct notebooks, guide struggling students, and remain available long after the school bell rings. Yet many of them return home with salaries that barely meet basic household needs. This is a reality that deserves attention, understanding, and change.
Private teachers play a vital role in the education system. Parents trust them with the future of their children. Schools proudly highlight students’ achievements, but behind every success is a teacher who invested time, patience, and effort. Sadly, many of these teachers receive salaries that do not reflect their contribution. Some earn less than the wages paid for temporary labour. Others wait for months to receive their pay. Such conditions weaken the dignity of a profession that deserves the highest respect.
The challenge does not end with low salaries. Many private teachers work under constant uncertainty. They fear losing their jobs without notice. Some are removed in the middle of an academic session, leaving them financially and emotionally distressed. A teacher who spends months building trust with students suddenly finds the classroom door closed. The loss is not only personal. Students also suffer because learning depends on stability and continuity.
One cannot expect quality education while ignoring the welfare of those who deliver it. A teacher burdened by financial stress cannot focus fully on creative teaching. Worry about rent, medical bills, or school fees for one’s own children affects peace of mind. Education grows best where teachers feel valued, secure, and motivated.
There is a quiet irony in the system. Schools often speak proudly about excellence, innovation, and holistic development. Yet the very people expected to deliver these goals are sometimes treated as a cost to be reduced. “Budget first, teacher later,” seems to become an unspoken rule in some places. Another familiar phrase could be, “Applause is free, salary is expensive.” Such thinking may save money in the short term, but it weakens the foundation of education in the long run. Penny wise, pound foolish. Empty pockets, full expectations.
It is important to recognise that many private schools also face financial challenges. Running a school involves expenses related to infrastructure, transport, technology, and maintenance. However, solving one financial problem by underpaying teachers cannot become a lasting solution. A balanced approach is necessary. Schools must manage resources wisely while ensuring fair treatment for their teaching staff.
Parents, too, have a role in this conversation. They often appreciate teachers during annual functions or examination results. That appreciation should also extend to supporting policies that ensure fair salaries and professional dignity. A respected teacher creates a stronger classroom, and a stronger classroom benefits every child.
Governments and education authorities can encourage better standards through practical guidelines that promote transparency in recruitment, timely payment of salaries, and fair service conditions. Such measures need not interfere with the independence of private institutions. Instead, they can help create a healthier educational environment where both schools and teachers thrive together.
School managements should also remember that loyal teachers are an investment, not an expense. A teacher who stays with an institution for years builds trust among students, parents, and the community. Frequent dismissals and poor salaries increase staff turnover, reduce morale, and affect academic performance. Retaining experienced teachers ultimately strengthens the reputation of a school.
Society often calls teachers the builders of the nation. Those words should carry meaning beyond speeches and celebrations. Respect is important, but respect alone cannot pay electricity bills or support a family. Fair wages, timely payments, job security, and professional dignity are equally important forms of recognition.
Private teachers do not seek luxury. They seek fairness. They seek the assurance that honest work will receive honest reward. They seek stability so they can focus on what they do best, teaching children with dedication and care.
Education flourishes when teachers flourish. A classroom becomes brighter when the person standing before it feels valued. If we truly believe that children deserve the best education, then we must also believe that private teachers deserve fair salaries, secure employment, and the respect that matches their priceless contribution. Exploiting those who shape the future is not only unfair. It is a mistake that no society can afford to make.
