Honouring the Martyrs of Handwara, Saluting Their Families

On June 1, Handwara town in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district witnessed a deeply moving and historic event that touched countless hearts. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the women of families who lost their loved ones in the line of duty and in the service of the nation were brought together and honored under the banner of “Veer Nari Samman.” The occasion was not merely a ceremony; it was a heartfelt tribute to sacrifice, courage, and resilience. The event was organized by the Punjab-based Khaki Association in collaboration of Awami Welfare Forum headed by Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Zeb which honored women from 53 martyr families belonging to different parts of the Handwara. Noted social activist Dr. Sheikh Jamsheed served as the key coordinator of the event, ensuring its successful organization and meaningful outreach to martyr families.

Distinguished personalities, including The event was graced by several eminent personalities and members of civil society, including: Mr. Shrikant Balasaheb Suse (IAS), Deputy Commissioner, Kupwara Mr. Zeeshan Khan (JKAS), Tehsildar, Handwara,Mr. Aizaz Panjwari, Divisional Forest Officer, Langate,Adv. Nadeem Majeed Dar, President, Bar Association Handwara, Dr. Aabida War, Social Worker,Mr. Mohammad Naveed Saraf, Branch Head, J&K Bank, Handwara, Mr. Tauseef Raina, President, Global Youth Foundation, Mr. Tahir Majeed, Director Centre for Public Interest, a policy research think tank. Adv. Mir Imran, Mr. Faisal Mohi Ud Din Sheikh, Mr. Sahil Pathan. Their presence added significance to the occasion and reflected society’s collective respect and gratitude towards the martyrs and their families.

The driving force behind the programme was Mrs. Annu Pasricha, President of the khaki Association, whose dedication and vision made this remarkable event possible. Her efforts were warmly appreciated by the families present, many of whom expressed gratitude for being remembered and acknowledged after years of carrying the weight of personal loss. What made the event truly special was that it highlighted a chapter of Kashmir’s history that often remains unspoken. For perhaps the first time on such a scale, the sacrifices made by ordinary families of the Valley for the nation were brought to the forefront and honored in a dignified and meaningful manner. It served as a reminder that behind every martyr stands a family whose courage is tested every single day.As the programme progressed, emotions filled the hall. Many women who had lost their husbands, sons, or brothers could not hold back their tears. Their silent expressions reflected years of pain, pride, and perseverance. The gathering transformed into more than a formalPathan it became a space where memories were shared, sacrifices were acknowledged, and wounds long hidden were gently touched with compassion.

Addressing the audience, Mrs. Annu Pasricha spoke passionately about the need to carry these stories of sacrifice beyond Kashmir. She said that the Khaki Association would take the stories of the brave sons of the Jhelum Valley from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, ensuring that people across the country learn about their courage and honor their contributions. Her words resonated deeply with those present and were met with heartfelt appreciation. The programme was aptly named “Veer Nari Samman,” carrying the inspiring slogan, “The Jhelum of India and the India of Jhelum.” More than a slogan, it reflected a powerful sentiment of unity, belonging, and shared national identity. It underscored the idea that the sacrifices made in Kashmir are not regional sacrifices alone; they belong to the entire nation. The event also carried an important message for policymakers and society at large. Speakers appealed to the government to establish a memorial dedicated to these martyrs so that future generations may remember their courage and draw inspiration from their lives. Such a memorial, they argued, would stand as a lasting symbol of gratitude and national remembrance.Perhaps the most enduring impact of the event was on the younger generation. In an era where role models are often shaped by social media and fleeting trends, the programme introduced young Kashmiris to real heroes—men and women whose lives embody courage, service, and sacrifice. These are stories that deserve to be told, preserved, and passed on.

As the event concluded, one sentiment echoed throughout the hall: the nation will always remain indebted to these families. Their sacrifices have strengthened the country, and their courage continues to inspire generations. Above all, the gathering paid tribute to the mothers who raised such brave sons and to the women who continue to carry their legacy with dignity and pride. The people of Kashmir, and indeed the entire nation, salute these families. Their stories are not merely memories of loss; they are enduring symbols of patriotism, resilience, and hope.
