Cricket in Jammu and Kashmir has changed dramatically over the last few years. What was once viewed as a region rich in passion but short on opportunity is now steadily producing players capable of competing at the highest level. At the heart of this transformation stands Auqib Nabi Dar a disciplined medium-fast bowler from Baramulla whose journey is defined by patience, sacrifice, and unshakeable belief.
Born on November 4, 1996, in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district, Auqib’s story is not one of early privilege or polished academies. It is a story built on long travels, limited facilities and a refusal to let circumstances dictate ambition. Auqib’s cricketing roots lie in street cricket, where he honed his instincts playing tennis-ball matches in Baramulla. Unlike many of his peers across the country, he did not grow up inside elite training systems. His development was entirely grassroots shaped by observation, repetition and raw hunger to improve.
Coming from a modest family his father is a government school teacher, Auqib was initially encouraged to pursue a stable career in medicine. But cricket slowly began to pull him away. His natural pace and control stood out and with encouragement from seniors at the Baramulla Cricket Club, he made the crucial transition from tennis ball to leather ball. What followed was discipline in its purest form. To access quality practice facilities, Auqib regularly travelled nearly 72 kilometres from Baramulla to Srinagar a round trip that often took close to four hours. He made that journey repeatedly, accepting exhaustion as part of the process, knowing that improvement demanded sacrifice.
Auqib made his senior debut for Jammu & Kashmir in 2018, steadily learning the demands of professional cricket. However, it was the 2024–25 domestic season that truly announced his arrival. Inspired by the aggressive mindset and action of Dale Steyn, Auqib developed into a bowler who could swing the ball both ways at pace while maintaining control. He wasn’t just quick he was consistent, relentless and mentally tough. That season, he took 44 wickets in the Ranji Trophy, breaking a long-standing record for the most wickets by a Jammu & Kashmir player in a single season. The performance placed him firmly among the most effective bowlers in domestic cricket.
His rise continued in the Duleep Trophy, where he delivered a moment that etched his name into history taking four wickets in four balls while representing North Zone. It was a rare feat, one that drew national attention and underlined his ability to produce match-turning spells. In October 2025, Auqib produced another career-defining performance against Rajasthan. He claimed 7 for 24 in the second innings and followed it up with a crucial half-century, playing a decisive role in securing an innings victory. By this point, his impact could no longer be ignored.
The ₹8.40 Crore Breakthrough
Despite years of strong domestic performances, Auqib had gone unsold in multiple IPL auctions. But sustained excellence eventually forced recognition. At the IPL 2026 auction, he entered with a base price of ₹30 lakh. What followed was a bidding war involving multiple franchises. In the end, Delhi Capitals secured his services for ₹8.40 crore making him one of the most expensive uncapped Indian players in IPL history. Beyond the financial milestone, the deal symbolized a broader shift: players from North Kashmir were no longer outsiders they were contenders. Those who have worked closely with Auqib describe him as a “workhorse”—a bowler built on discipline rather than shortcuts. His late movement, often referred to as his “boomerang swing,” combined with his stamina and control, has become his trademark.
Yet, for Auqib, success has always carried a deeper meaning.
After the auction, he spoke openly about his dream of starting a cricket academy in Baramulla so young players from his region don’t have to travel the same long roads he once did. His ambition extends beyond personal achievement to building opportunities for the next generation. As he prepares to share the new ball with international stars in the upcoming IPL season, the “Baramulla Express” stands on the brink of national selection. His journey proves that lack of infrastructure, distance and recognition can be overcome through discipline, patience and unwavering belief.
From the streets of Baramulla to the biggest stage in Indian cricket, Auqib Nabi’s rise is not just a success story—it’s a statement.
