Every year on 5th September, India celebrates Teacher’s Day to honour the invaluable contribution of teachers in shaping individuals and society. The day commemorates the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a distinguished teacher, philosopher, and the second President of India. However, over the years, the essence of this occasion has gradually shifted from gratitude and respect to the exchange of expensive gifts.

A teacher’s greatest reward has never been flowers, gift boxes, or costly presents. The greatest gift a student can offer is respect, discipline, sincerity, and a commitment to learning. In earlier times, students expressed their gratitude through their behaviour, humility, and lifelong appreciation for their teachers. These values built a bond of trust and mutual respect that remained strong for years.

As Teacher’s Day approaches on 5th September, it is time to rethink how we celebrate this meaningful occasion. Instead of focusing on material gifts, let us revive the tradition of honouring our teachers with heartfelt words, gratitude, and responsible conduct. A simple “Thank you,” a handwritten note, or the promise to become a better student carries far greater value than any expensive present.

Teachers dedicate their lives to educating and guiding future generations. Their influence cannot be measured by the price of a gift but by the success, character, and values of their students.

Respect should not be limited to one day in a year; it should be reflected in our actions everyday.

This Teacher’s Day, let us stop the culture of gifting and return to the values that truly define the student-teacher relationship. Let us celebrate with respect, appreciation, and gratitude, ensuring that the spirit of Teacher’s Day remains pure and meaningful for generations to come!
