For thousands of people living in Balochistan, Dr Mahrang Baloch means a lot of things, particularly hope, strength, and persistence. She became an example and inspiration for a lot of people due to her struggle from private suffering to becoming a community activist and advocate. As an accomplished medical doctor, she decided to become an advocate and public activist, representing people whose voices are unheard and ignored by others. Thus, through her persistence, she has become an influential person in modern-day Baloch activism and modern-day women’s activism.
Dr Mahrang Baloch is a native Baloch woman, born on 1 January 1993 in a family that had some understanding of current social and political realities in Pakistan and other countries. Her father, Abdul Gaffar Langove, was a known activist and politician who frequently discussed human rights issues in the public sphere.
Her life changed for good when, in December 2009, she learnt that her father was detained on his way to Karachi. At sixteen, she entered the public domain to protest his release. He was later released but then reported to have been rearrested in 2011 and found dead afterwards. This made a lot of impact on her life, serving as a crucial milestone in the development of her advocacy efforts.
She managed to continue with her education despite all challenges to get her MBBS degree from Bolan Medical College, Quetta. It was an excellent choice since it allowed her to have a respectable and well-paid job. Her experiences, coupled with witnessing the sufferings of numerous people, prompted her to dedicate her time to public advocacy.
In 2017, her younger brother, Nasir Baloch, was detained but then released afterwards, and she found more strength to commit herself fully to activism. While her activism began as a private matter, it slowly evolved into something bigger; it turned into her way of helping other people who were facing similar problems within their families.
Mahrang Baloch’s advocacy is widely recognized for the cases of forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and other human rights violations in Balochistan through peaceful protests, campaigns raising awareness, gatherings of communities, etc. She has tried to draw more attention to such problems by highlighting the plight of families involved in these tragedies.
By organizing such actions and protests, Mahrang Baloch tries to bring human problems into discussion. The stories about parents looking for missing family members, sisters searching for the truth, etc, have been shared to draw more public attention to people’s problems.
Another important moment in her social activism happened in 2020 when Mahrang Baloch was among those who opposed the abolition of the quota system in Bolan Medical College. As a result of the hunger strike and other actions, the proposition was eventually dropped because the system was helpful for the Baloch people, it provided access to education for students from remote parts of Balochistan.
Currently, as the head of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), Dr Mahrang Baloch continues to work in terms of raising awareness and conducting discussions on issues concerning the Baloch people. Furthermore, she has also attended the Baloch Raji Muchi (Baloch National Gathering) held in Gwadar in July 2024, which focused on achieving unity and voicing issues raised by the Baloch people.
The emergence of Dr Mahrang Baloch as a notable activist is another example of women becoming increasingly influential as leaders in various social and political movements within the region of Balochistan. Women have always remained marginalized from leadership roles within society, and in this sense, she presents herself as a powerful example of women’s involvement in advocacy activities and social change.
Her influence and actions have served as motivation for other women to participate in politics and social activities. The rallies and awareness programs that she organizes highlight the potential of women in influencing public debate and raising social consciousness among communities.
Apart from being a notable activist, she serves as an inspiration for thousands of others. She is the epitome of bravery and perseverance for those who have suffered violence and injustice, who have lost their dear and near. For students, she is a symbol of determination and dedication. For women, she acts as a representation of leadership qualities.
To many of her supporters, she is a voice that gives prominence to the issues of those who are often overlooked. Her advocacy efforts have enabled her to give the voices of the oppressed a chance while making sure that there is some acknowledgement of what the families going through bereavement need. Her skills in transforming the tragedies in her life into acts of public service have won her respect from different parts of Baloch society.
She is also known internationally as an activist. This is because the backing she received from celebrities such as Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai ensured that her activism got more publicity. With such support, there was increased global awareness about the discussions that were ongoing concerning the right to participate in civic processes and the human rights situation in Balochistan.
The life and struggles of Dr Mahrang Baloch are an inspiration to many people in Baloch society today. She has become a respected leader who uses her activism skills and willingness to sacrifice to create a positive impact in the lives of many people.
