These schools are a beacon of hope and an example that education can foster peace, generate dreams, and mould a generation that will aspire to a future filled with opportunity, harmony, and promise.
The education for peace mission in Jammu and Kashmir is not just about classrooms and books, it is about restoring trust, building hope, and enabling a generation to envision a future characterized by harmony, opportunities, and progress. The success of Army Goodwill Schools is a living example that education is one of the most powerful tools for building peace and bringing a brighter tomorrow.
The area has experienced serious challenges in the form of conflict, hardships and limited access to quality education. During such challenges, Army Goodwill Schools have come as a ray of hope within the Indian Army’s Operation Sadbhavana. The schools are not only hubs of knowledge; they also provide facilities where children have opportunities to develop, flourish, and blossom into responsible and confident human beings.
Through education, cultural activities, and sports, the Army is creating opportunities for youth, giving them avenues to acquire knowledge, compete, and blossom with pride and dignity. One of the highlights of this program is the creation of Army Goodwill Schools. They have become a lifeline for thousands of children in the Union Territory, particularly in the most far-flung and backward pockets of society. From primary to upper secondary levels, they deliver organized and consistent education where government centers are rare or hard to reach.
Outside the classrooms, Army Goodwill Schools offer libraries, computer rooms, and playfields to facilitate all-around growth. Through the years, these schools not only imparted knowledge but also instilled discipline, courage, and confidence. Most students have pursued further studies and careers in professional fields, upholding academic success as well as attributes of responsibility, grit, and honesty. Army Goodwill Schools are grooming a new generation of young men and women in all aspects, who envision a better and safer future for themselves.
The programme began in 1998 when the Indian Army recognized the serious social and emotional effects of war on communities. Operation Sadbhavana, or “Goodwill” was initiated with a vision to restore trust, empower communities, and usher in enduring peace through education and development. Army Goodwill Schools were established in far-flung and conflict-ridden areas. The Army also assisted other public schools by renovating classrooms, constructing libraries and play areas, and making available vital amenities like furniture, toilets, and study materials. This ensured that children in even far-flung areas had access to quality education.
Today, the project has expanded substantially. There are about 46 Army Goodwill Schools in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, and there are almost 1,900 state schools that are being supported by infrastructural and educational aid. There are over 14,000 students being educated in Goodwill Schools, and more than 100,000 people have benefited from this scheme. Approximately 1,500 economically challenged students are awarded scholarships annually, and approximately 1,000 locally teaching and non-teaching personnel are hired, making the school’s community centered.
The schools have achieved outstanding academic performance. In one particular year, students achieved a remarkable 100% pass rate in the CBSE Class 10 exam, even under demanding circumstances. The school’s support focus is on their holistic education, which includes digital classrooms, computer and science laboratories, and extra-curricular activities that inspire students in creativity and critical thinking. Programs such as “Kashmir Super 50 (Engineering)” and “Kashmir Super 30 (Medical/NEET)” help deserving students from low socio-economic backgrounds to prepare competitively. One year, 35 students registered for NEET, and 30 of them cleared it and got MBBS/BDS admission in state and out of state.
The impacts extend beyond actual curricula. In difficult contexts, these schools offer stability, safety, and hope. Children can count on the schools in their vicinity and can learn in a safe environment while their parents generally have peace of mind. Schools develop trust, social cohesion, and sustainable peace in societies, even in post-conflict situations, by overcoming the area’s economic and social barriers, providing scholarships, and hiring local staff.
To further maximize their impact, the schools continue to build on psychosocial support, foster community engagement, offer enhanced teacher training, and partner with NGOs and private organizations to introduce innovation and more resources. The assessments aim not merely at academic achievement but also at students’ individual development, confidence, social integration, and preparedness to make a positive contribution to society.
Army Goodwill Schools, as part of Operation Sadbhavana, are more than schools; they are the catalysts of change, hope and resilience. They provide youth with education, values, and confidence; they provide youth with the tools to escape the shackles of limitation and fear. Through education, they are cultivating the seeds of coexistence, dignity, and progress in a region that has suffered for way too long in the grip of violence.
These schools are a beacon of hope and an example that education can foster peace, generate dreams, and mould a generation that will envision a future filled with opportunity, harmony, and promise.
