The financial independence of women refers to the ability to earn money and make decisions independently. At present, women must work and become financially independent. With their earnings, women can contribute to their family income, educate their children, and improve their family’s lifestyle.
Women’s empowerment does not just transform one family; rather, it brings about a positive transformation in the entire community. Motivated by financially independent women, other girls and women can fulfil their dreams and create a better future. For the development of women, various programs have been launched by the government, including Sakhi Centres, Mahila Shakti Kendras (MSKs), and District Hubs for Empowerment of Women (DHEWs). Through these programs, women are assured of their safety, given guidance, provided training and offered jobs
Significance of Financial Independence
Financial independence is crucial for women since it increases confidence and self-respect. A woman with her own finances is more assured about handling various life experiences. It reduces dependence on others for basic needs and decision-making processes.
Financially independent women can assist their family members with education, healthcare, food costs, and other necessities. Their contribution raises the living standards and ensures better prospects for children. Moreover, financial independence allows women to pursue their dreams and acquire knowledge in any field. They become competent enough to achieve professional success and expand their business. They gain recognition, respect, and equal rights. The social status of women rises, and they are treated equally by everyone around them. Thus, financial independence helps women lead a dignified life without compromising their freedoms and aspirations.
When women are financially independent, they can contribute significantly to reducing poverty and unemployment in society since they become productive members of the economy. Small enterprises owned by women provide jobs and develop the market environment. Women’s success motivates other females to gain education and skills to become self-reliant individuals.
Some of the schemes and models introduced to empower women include the Sakhi Centres, which are referred to as One Stop Centres. They assist women who have been subjected to any kind of violence or harassment in terms of legal advice, counseling, and protection. Mahila Shakti Kendras, or MSKs, assist women through increasing their knowledge and development of skills, which further leads to women taking up employment and becoming entrepreneurs. The DHEW, or the District Hubs for Empowerment of Women, are aimed at providing information regarding various government schemes to women. SHGs, digital literacy initiatives, and other startups are some of the other ways of empowering women.
The fields of education and digital technology are contributing significantly towards the empowerment of women through independence and success. Education provides women with all the necessary information, confidence, and skills to pursue careers and engage in entrepreneurship. Digital technology has facilitated easy access to information, and today, through online learning platforms such as MOOCs, courses, and workshops, one can gain knowledge without travelling physically. Besides facilitating learning, technology helps women realize their rights, communication, and global networking.
Internet-based businesses have enabled many women to achieve financial freedom by providing more options that enable them to work independently at home. Women are engaging in online businesses where clothes, handmade products, foods, beauty, and other products and services are sold. Such platforms facilitate the marketing of products, communication between the seller and buyer, and growth in small enterprises. Women can earn a living through these channels without making costly investments.
Women entrepreneurs are transforming society for the better. Women entrepreneurs start businesses from their homes and are quite successful by putting in effort and being innovative. Their success stories serve as an inspiration for many young girls and also motivate other women to strive towards achieving their goals. Economic independence enables women to take part in decision-making within families and communities. This further ensures that society will be created in which women get equal respect and opportunities.
Many women encounter obstacles when striving to be economically empowered. Uneducated females are disadvantaged in obtaining quality employment and developing their enterprises. The culture of many communities hinders women from participating in economic activities beyond the household because of stereotypes against women.
Poor finances hinder them from developing their capabilities and expanding their business operations. Issues regarding safety and travelling prevent women from accessing educational facilities and workplaces. Besides, they struggle to balance domestic chores and childcare responsibilities together with paid labour.
The women who are economically empowered will rear confident children and also contribute to national development through their talents and skills. Through such women, we are able to change the traditional stereotypes that exist and make our societies more equal and respectful.
