I still remember the first time I heard his name spoken with quiet pride in Pulwama. It wasn’t shouted from a stage or printed on a flashy poster. It travelled the way real stories do in Kashmir, through conversations, through whispers of struggle, through the belief that someone from among us had dared to step into a cage and fight the world head-on. Owais Yaqoob’s journey is not just about mixed martial arts; it is about carrying a place on your back and refusing to put it down, no matter how heavy it becomes.

Owais was raised in Murran, a village where aspirations frequently struggle with reality before they can even stand straight. His early life, like that of many boys here, was molded by a lack of resources, uncertainty, and a persistent doubt about the future. Although they weren’t considered a career, sports weren’t a luxury either. However, Owais found movement, discipline, and control somewhere between school, family obligations, and the winding streets of his village. Martial arts entered his life as a structure that required self-respect, patience, and sacrifice rather than as a quick route to fame.

Before the cages, the lights, and the walkouts, there were mats and long hours of training. He began with traditional martial arts, learning to respect technique before power and discipline before aggression. Those years were not glamorous. There was little money, limited exposure, and almost no roadmap for someone from Kashmir dreaming of professional MMA. What kept him going, as he himself reflects in conversations, was mental strength. He often speaks about how people talk about meditation in sports, about calming the mind, about mental health. For him, faith became that anchor. As a Muslim, he found meditation in prayer, grounding himself through namaz, building a mindset that could survive defeat, injury, and doubt.

Athletes from regions like Kashmir endure constant struggles with financing their training camps, equipment purchases, travel expenses and recovery time after a fight. There were times when getting to the venue was valued higher than winning the fight itself. Owais chose to develop an athlete’s mind and ability instead of relying on the possibility of improvements in his environment. He had been involved in competitions, working on developing skills through amateur circuits and learning to be calm and relaxed while competing during hard times. Owais realized that every competition, regardless of winning or losing, provided a chance to learn.

Owais has a distinct understanding of the mental aspect of fighting as opposed to many other fighters. He explains that many fights are not only physical matchups; they are also mental matchups. When a fighter enters the cage, he or she must face fear, expectation and self-doubt all at once. For Owais coming from Kashmir, he had a greater burden of having to live up to the expectations of representing this area. Each fight represented more than just building his own win-loss record; it was a chance for him to prove that wrestlers from this area are worthy of recognition on a level that is very few and far between.

As Owais’ career progressed, various opportunities began to present themselves. He signed with some of the largest Indian MMA promotions, at which point he transitioned from being a ‘local boy’ chasing a ‘dream’ to being a professional fighter appearing on nationally televised events as an athletic competitor. The pressure of performing well in front of an audience causes one to quickly develop new techniques and skills, and expectations always rise along with the increasing number of people watching.Along with the increased success comes an increase in expectations and scrutiny from fans, which makes performing at a higher level more demanding.

The most significant challenge for Owais was gaining international exposure. When competing against fighters who come from various countries and backgrounds, one needs to adapt to their body style and movement patterns. Additionally, Owais was faced with being away from home for extended periods of time in an unfamiliar environment and trying to maintain a mental connection to his Indian heritage while competing abroad. Many of the experiences Owais had while competing internationally have had a significant impact on who he is as an individual and as a fighter.Although he is now able to look back and see how his experience of being raised in Pulwama has shortened the distance between Pulwama and his current position, he often reflects on how his wins abroad were not celebrated as much as he would have liked, due to the journey he has taken along the way

One of the most defining aspects of his story is his commitment to giving back. Establishing a martial arts academy in his home district was not a business decision; it was a statement. He wanted young boys and girls in Kashmir to see a path that he never had clearly laid out in front of him. Through training others, he found purpose beyond his own fights. He speaks about how sports can channel energy, improve mental health, and offer discipline in a region that has seen more than its share of unrest.

Owais has a sense of responsibility and is not a person who believes in titles. He understands that people become who they are through influence, and that is what young athletes view him as, not just a fighter but also as an opportunity. Owais always thinks before he speaks and tries to always be consistent, patient, and faithful rather than trying to achieve something quickly. He reminds young athletes that it takes many years of hard work, which is done behind the scenes, to reach international levels of competition and not to take the easy route.

His journey resonates because it is honest. No false bravado, no attempt to romanticize struggle. He admits to feeling anxious, under pressure, and tired at times. He talks about maintaining mental fortitude and how, in times of uncertainty, faith, both in God and in oneself, becomes crucial. Owais offers a more composed, grounded interpretation of strength in a sport where aggression frequently takes center stage.Today, when he walks into a cage carrying the Indian tricolour, he also carries the name of Kashmir with him. Not as a political statement, but as a personal truth. Every punch, takedown and round provides affirmation for those who once thought that the international arena was not attainable for athletes from this part of the world. However, he has much greater aspirations to accomplish than what he has done thus far. Like other fighters, he aspires to reach the highest rank within the sport, fully aware that the path in front of him will undoubtedly be just as hard as the one behind.

The narrative of Owais Yaqoob is not an illustration of a fairy tale. It represents a very vulnerable, exhaustive and uneven human being. It encapsulates a tale of determination, bravery and spiritual fortitude from the small lane of Pulwama to the world of MMA. And perhaps that is why it is so significant. Owais’s story serves as a reminder that real pedigrees require time, produce scars and alter the people who observe them in a culture that now seems obsessed with achieving quick success.
