While Washington tightens the screws with tariffs and lectures on foreign policy choices, India is quietly expanding its diplomatic bandwidth. Sitting next to Xi and Putin in Tianjin, Modi sent a subtle but powerful message: India will engage across the spectrum.

The recent SCO summit in Tianjin was not just another multilateral gathering that makes headlines for a day and then fades into oblivion. It marked something deeper, something that could shape the next decade of global politics. India and China, after years of staring each other down across icy Himalayan passes, sat at the same table and spoke a language that was unfamiliar in recent years: cooperation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping did not just exchange courtesies. They agreed that India and China are development partners, not rivals. That one sentence tells you everything about the recalibration underway. For years, the narrative has been one of hostility, mistrust, and open confrontation. The Galwan clashes of 2020 left scars that ran deep, not only along the Line of Actual Control but in the political psyche of both nations. Trade dipped, diplomatic talks stalled, and the idea of a meaningful thaw felt remote.

Yet here we are in 2025, watching direct flights resume between the two countries, visa restrictions lifted, and conversations about restoring pilgrimages like Kailash Mansarovar back on the table. None of this would have happened without intent from both sides. China needs economic partners at a time when its growth is slowing and its Belt and Road projects face pushback. India, on the other hand, is navigating a volatile global economy where being rigid about alignments can cost heavily. Now, let us be clear. This does not mean the border disputes are forgotten or that India is turning pro-China. Far from it. What it does mean is that Delhi understands something fundamental: strategy is not about choosing friends; it is about serving interests. Today, India is making sure that its interests do not get hostage to anyone’s agenda, not even Washington’s.

And this brings us to the other side of the story, the United States. When Donald Trump returned to the White House, many in India wondered whether the warmth of the first term would return. Instead, what came was a cold draft. Trump’s second innings has been marked by tariffs that cut deep into Indian exports, accusations over oil purchases from Russia, and even a shameful episode of mass deportations of Indian nationals that sparked outrage back home. It was a reminder that U.S. foreign policy, at least under Trump, is brutally transactional. If you do not fall in line with Washington’s terms, you pay the price. So India is hedging. And the SCO summit was a masterclass in hedging done right. While Washington tightens the screws with tariffs and lectures on foreign policy choices, India is quietly expanding its diplomatic bandwidth. Sitting next to Xi and Putin in Tianjin, Modi sent a subtle but powerful message: India will engage across the spectrum. It will not mortgage its autonomy for a seat at someone else’s table.

This is why the phrase “multipolar world” matters now more than ever. For years, it sounded like a cliché repeated in academic seminars. Today, it is reality. The West can no longer assume loyalty from countries like India. Alignments are fluid, partnerships are issue-based, and power is distributed. The SCO, once dismissed as a talk shop, suddenly looks relevant because it offers an alternative space, one where Asian voices are central, not peripheral. What does this mean for the future? It means India will continue to walk a delicate path. With China, it will cooperate where possible, compete where necessary, and confront when there is no choice. With the U.S., it will maintain strategic ties but refuse to be lectured or bullied into submission. With Russia, it will keep the energy and defense channels open because they serve Indian interests.

The bottom line is simple: this is not the era of permanent friends or permanent enemies. It is the era of permanent interests. India understands that. The Tianjin summit was not about photo-ops or ceremonial speeches. It was about signaling a new doctrine, India will talk to everyone, commit to no one blindly, and pursue a foreign policy that puts sovereignty and strategic autonomy at the center.

The world is watching. Some in Washington are alarmed. Some in Beijing are cautious. But for India, this is not about optics or approval. It is about survival in a world where loyalties shift and power has no single pole. And if that means shaking hands with Xi while negotiating with Trump, so be it. That is not weakness. That is what smart diplomacy looks like in 2025.
