In the growingly fractured world, India and China Asia’s two new giants and old civilizations are discreetly engaged in a diplomatic reset. August 2025 has become a time of cautious optimism, fueled by India’s strategic pragmatism and China’s desire to re-engage.

The strongest warming signal in the bilateral relationship after the 2020 Galwan standoff is the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Delhi this week. His meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, and NSA Ajit Doval suggest that both sides understand that further engagement is neither in the economic interest of either party nor for regional stability.

India, with its growing economic influence, is approaching this opportunity on its own terms. The anticipation of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to China to hold talks with President Xi Jinping is indicative of New Delhi’s assertiveness to set the terms of engagement. This is not a return to naivety but an act of diplomatic maturity.

Key economic measures have already been taken. China has removed restrictions on key exports to India, such as rare earth magnets and machinery. Trade routes along the borders are under review for reopening. Indian tourist visas for Chinese citizens have been resumed. Negotiations are being held to resume direct commercial flights. These are symbolic measures only they are structural changes towards normalised relations.

Norwegian Diplomat and environmentalist Erik Solheim wrote on X:
I am an extremely close friend of China and India, two of the world’s greatest civilization states… These moments, it seems, are a once in a lifetime chance at a reset. He also mentions that improved relations would make the Global South more robust, enhance economic relations, and offer people to people exchange mentioning Buddhism, green energy, and green technology as natural fields of cooperation.

Of course, there are still first-rate border disputes and old scores to settle. But India appears to be able to compartmentalise cooperation where possible while standing firm on issues of sovereignty. As Solheim so correctly says, ‘Border disputes can be put on the backburner to be resolved by future, hopefully wiser, generations.’

India’s foreign policy in the times we are living in is one of balance and not ideological change. Willingly engaging with Beijing on the issue of U.S. protectionism and evolving global realities, New Delhi’s stands are not a pivot but of its vision of increased multipolarity. India is prepared to talk, compete, and cooperate on its own terms.

The current is no “love marriage,” as Solheim would say, but it is quickly assuming the shape of a “marriage of convenience” out of mutual respect for one another, shared interests, and geopolitical realism.

If this opportunity is seized well, August 2025 can mark the beginning of a new, long-lasting chapter between Asia’s two giants with India leading the way with strategic vision and behind-the-scenes strength.
