In a landmark development for the world’s largest democracy, India has entered the Top 100 in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index for the first time, securing the 99th rank among 167 nations in the Sustainable Development Report 2025, released today, June 25, 2025. This historic accomplishment reflects the country’s unwavering commitment to inclusive growth, environmental care, and social equity.India’s SDG Index score rose to 66.95, up significantly from 63.99 in 2024, a testament to years of policy innovation, grassroots participation, and people-centric governance. This achievement is not just a matter of statistics—it is a story of transformation. Over the last decade, India has accelerated its efforts across sectors, ensuring that sustainable development becomes a shared national mission. The rise into the Top 100 marks the country’s position as a global role model in balancing growth with sustainability.

The global SDG Index, developed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN), evaluates progress across 17 goals ranging from poverty reduction to clean energy and quality education. India’s climb in the rankings highlights the remarkable success of its developmental roadmap guided by the vision of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas.

India’s impressive score reflects success across multiple fronts:

No Poverty (SDG 1): Landmark initiatives like PM Garib Kalyan Yojana and Direct Benefit Transfers have empowered millions of households, creating stronger social safety nets and boosting economic resilience at the grassroots.

Clean Water & Sanitation (SDG 6): Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, over 14 crore rural households have received tap water connections. Meanwhile, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan continues to make India cleaner and healthier, with over 50% of villages now certified as “ODF Plus”.

Affordable & Clean Energy (SDG 7): India is leading a green energy revolution. With rapid growth in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, the country has emerged as a top 5 global leader in renewable energy capacity.

Decent Work & Economic Growth (SDG 8): Flagship employment programs and the push for MSMEs and digital entrepreneurship have generated opportunities across urban and rural sectors, especially benefiting youth and women.

Sustainable Cities (SDG 11): Urban development programs like Smart Cities Mission and PM Awas Yojana have expanded access to dignified housing and efficient infrastructure. These results are backed by data and global validation. The SDG Index shows that India’s efforts are not only ambitious but also deeply impactful—reaching the last mile and uplifting those who need it the most.

India’s rise is bolstered by the stellar performance of its states and Union Territories. According to the NITI Aayog SDG India Index 2023–24, India now holds an overall national score of 71, with over 32 states and UTs categorized as “Front Runners”.Among the top-performing states are Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, all known for their strong performance in health, education, and infrastructure. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and Jammu & Kashmir have shown extraordinary improvement, reflecting the power of cooperative federalism. This success is the result of a healthy spirit of competition among states, encouraged by NITI Aayog’s data-driven governance model. It has inspired state governments to align their local development priorities with global sustainability goals.

A critical factor in India’s SDG progress has been the integration of technology, transparency, and grassroots participation. Innovations like Aadhaar, UPI, CoWIN, and the Digital India framework have enabled faster delivery of services, ensured financial inclusion, and brought governance to people’s fingertips. The spirit of community action, seen during large-scale vaccination drives, sanitation campaigns, and water conservation initiatives, has fueled citizen engagement and ownership—making SDG implementation truly participatory.Furthermore, India’s growing number of start-ups and innovation hubs focused on clean tech, agri-tech, ed-tech, and climate solutions are helping localize the SDGs and create sustainable livelihoods.

India’s leap into the Top 100 is not just a national triumph—it is an inspiration for the developing world. As a large, diverse, and populous country, India’s success proves that sustainable development is achievable at scale. It demonstrates how a nation can drive economic growth while ensuring social inclusion and environmental stewardship.Speaking at the launch of the 2025 report, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, renowned economist and UN advisor, said, “India’s SDG progress is a blueprint for how large nations can mobilize innovation, federal cooperation, and social inclusion to meet global goals. The world is watching—and learning from India.”

The Road Ahead: Viksit Bharat 2047

While India celebrates this milestone, the journey continues. With five years remaining to achieve the 2030 Agenda, India is now focused on ensuring every citizen benefits from the fruits of sustainable development. The Government of India has already integrated SDG targets into the national vision of “Viksit Bharat @2047”—a roadmap for a developed India by its 100th year of independence. This vision rests on five key pillars:

Inclusive and resilient economy

Environmentally sustainable growth

Health and education for all

Women-led development

Global leadership in innovation and climate action

With its democratic spirit, youthful energy, and cultural ethos of harmony with nature, India is uniquely positioned to lead the global mission of sustainability.India’s entry into the Top 100 of the UN SDG Index is a defining moment—a reflection of collective determination, visionary policymaking, and people’s participation. It tells the world that India is not just a follower in the global development narrative—it is a leader, a doer, and a believer in a better, more inclusive future for all.
