Recently, the Lolab-Kupwara Valley was awarded gold for being the best offbeat destination in India at the prestigious Outlook Traveller Awards. These awards serve as the benchmark of quality in the travel and tourism industry, celebrating the best of the best each year. Lolab Valley has proven that it is the best and is a breathtaking region worth visiting.
Plurality makes a place beautiful by bringing together a variety of different cultures, traditions, and stories. When we dive deep into the history of any place, we discover numerous tales that are waiting to be told. These stories reveal the rich cultural heritage, the traditions, and the struggles of the people who have lived there over the years. To get a true understanding of a place, we must interact with the people who live there. Every place is a blend of all the names that have inspired its final name, a mixture of all the people who have lived there, and a combination of every single detail that is apparent on the pathways. The sounds, smells, and sights of a place all contribute to its unique character.
We can never love a place without knowing its history, its flaws, and its secrets. Understanding what a place is made of, what it hides behind its secret spots and the challenges that the people endured to create it, is essential to appreciating its beauty. One such place that is both beautiful and remote is the Lolab Valley. A name that sounds like the best lyric of a song, the metaphor of a poem, the most enchanting colour of the rainbow. Located in the northern part of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, the Lolab Valley is a place of great natural beauty, with lush green forests, meandering streams, and gushing waterfalls. The valley is also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare species of birds and animals.
Lolab Valley is a stunning destination located in the northernmost part of India’s Jammu and Kashmir state. The valley is made up of three smaller valleys – Potnai, Brunai, and Kalaroos – and is a picturesque location with a rich history and culture. The valley’s people are warm and welcoming, and they take great pride in their traditions and way of life. The valley has a long and complex history, with many stories of love, laughter, and magnificence waiting to be told. And only those who have experienced the valley’s air can understand the freshness of its spirits.
Recently, Lolab Valley was awarded gold for being the best offbeat destination in India at the prestigious Outlook Traveller Awards. The Outlook Traveller Awards are the benchmark of quality in the travel and tourism industry and celebrate the best of the best each year. Lolab Valley proved that it is the best and is a breath-taking region worth visiting.
Lolab Valley is made up of beautiful hills covered in dense forests of Deodar, which provide a natural habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna. The valley is laced with a beautiful stream called Lalkul, and several tributaries flowing from the surrounding hills feed it. One of the most famous attractions of the valley is Sat Barran in Kalaroos, a massive cave-like structure with seven arched niches carved into the stone. Locals believe that Sat Barran is the entry point of the Kalaroos Caves which leads all the way to Russian, but this is just a legend (even the name of the village is inspired from this myth, Kalaroos- as in Qila-e-Roos). There is little information about the origins of these caves and the historical origin of Sat Barran remains unknown to this day. Some people also believe that the Sat Barran used to be a temple where the Pandavas used to worship.
The valley is dotted with several charming towns, including Chandigam, Sogam, Kalaroos, Kigam and Lalpore, Tekipora, each with its unique charm and importance. For instance, Anderbuagh village is home to the famous Lov-nag, while Varnow village is the birthplace of Allama Anwar Shah Kashmiri who was an Islamic scholar and poet best known for his expertise in the study of hadith and a unique approach to interpreting traditions.
Lolab Valley is also famous as the “Fruit Bowl of Jammu and Kashmir,” with fruits like apples, cherries, peaches, apricots, and walnuts being quite common here. The valley has vast pastures of land and rice fields that are dotted by small houses with tin roofs. In recent years, tourism has received a boost, and the valley is getting the recognition it deserves. It is untouched and pure, and it is a privilege to be able to experience its beauty. It has been attracting visitors for centuries and has been appreciated by saints, poets, philosophers, and even Bollywood celebrities.
However, no matter how beautiful anything seems, it has its flaws and Lolab Valley is no exception. While it is breath-taking, it certainly has room for improvement. Villages like Chandigam, Dooruswani, Khurhama, Krusan, Khumrial, Nagsari, and Cherkoot have tremendous potential and can be developed further for tourists and locals alike. Kayar-e-wan ( Pine Forest) is another beautiful place in Lolab which is not known to many people but has potential to become a major tourist spot. A little attention to this place is all it needs and it will be a centre of attraction to anyone who visits Lolab Valley.
As far as the accommodation of tourists is concerned, there are tourist bungalows at Chandigam in Lolab Valley and one at Khumriyal village as well. However, they are not properly functional and can be further developed so that more and more people can enjoy this beautiful valley without having to worry about where to stay for the night. Besides, while talking to the locals, I came to know that some of these places have a shortage of water, which might be a hurdle in the progress of the Valley. These issues need to be addressed to make Lolab Valley grow and glow.
Overall, Lolab is an amazing destination that offers something for both nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. You can explore the valley either on foot or by horseback, and enjoy various activities such as camping, trekking, and birdwatching. The locals are friendly and hospitable, which enhances the overall experience of the trip. In summary, a visit to Lolab is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is worth having. Uncover the untold stories of Lolab and keep them with you forever.
