The human potential is vast, and there are individuals among us who exemplify this potential with their remarkable abilities. They inspire us to think beyond our limitations and to reach new heights. One such extraordinary individual whose life serves as an inspiration to us all is Sheetal Devi, a Para-Archer from Kishtwar of Jammu & Kashmir.
Sheetal Devi was born into a lower-middle-class family in Lodihar village of Kishtwar in 2007. Her birth brought simultaneous challenges of gloom, challenge, and patience for her parents, Mann Singh and Shakti Devi, as she was born without upper limbs due to a disease known as phocomelia. Parenting a child with such a condition in the backward village of Lodihar, particularly a female child, was a testament to the patience of her parents. However, the love and mercy parents possess for their children make them accept the challenges that time brings for them. Now, Mr and Mrs. Mann Singh and their differently-abled child were subject to the testament of time.
Sheetal Devi’s parents admitted her to a local school, where she developed her ability to write with her feet. She was known for her energetic and bold personality, and she would impress her colleagues, teachers, and native villagers by climbing trees with her feet. Her parents were remarkably caring and encouraging, and their support helped her to thrive.
Rashtriya Rifles Unit Lodihar Kishtiwar discovered a Gem.
In 2019, Sheetal Devi attended a youth sports event organized by RR Unit Lodihar Kistiwar where the Rashtriya Rifles team spotted her enthusiasm, amazing energy, and ability. They decided to take her under their guidance, supporting her education and facilitating her every kind of medical assistance. RR’s unit decided to train her in a particular realm of sports. However, being without upper limbs did not make her eligible for para archery. But as the team knew that Miss Sheetal could climb a tree, they found hope. They researched to find if para archery was possible by foot and found the name of Matthew Stutzman of America, an archer who used his legs and feet to participate in the sport.
RR’s team chose Abhilasha Chaudry and Kuldeep Wadhwan as coaches to train Miss Sheetal Devi for para archery. Firstly, the team thought of prosthetics (fixing artificial body parts) for her, but medical specialists found no hope in her case for such surgery. Then the team decided to train her in para-archery through legs and feet.
Miss Sheetal Created History.
In 2023, Sheetal Devi participated as an archer shooting her arrows with her legs and feet in the Asian Para Games, securing two gold medals for her country, Bharat. She became the first female para-archer in the world to win gold medals in a sport of international status. She also won the Arjuna Award in Sports given away by the government of India.
Sheetal Devi’s achievements are a testament to her dedication, perseverance, and hard work. She is an inspiration to people around the world, and her story reminds us that disability is not a hindrance to achieving one’s dreams. Sheetal Devi is enthusiastically looking forward to the next Paralympics contest to be held in France in 2024. Her parents, coaches, native villagers, and, above all, her country, Bharat, are proud of her achievements.
In conclusion, Sheetal Devi’s story is one of courage, perseverance, and determination. She has shown that with hard work and dedication, anyone can overcome adversity and achieve their dreams. Her achievements serve as a beacon of hope for people around the world, and we can all learn from her inspiring story.
