The Montessori method of education, developed by Maria Montessori, is a child-centered approach that emphasizes independence, hands-on learning, and respect for a child’s natural development. In a Montessori classroom, children learn through exploration and self-directed activities, while the teacher acts as a guide rather than a traditional instructor. This method nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills from an early age. The philosophy strongly aligns with the vision of National Education Policy 2020, which places great importance on foundational learning during early childhood. NEP 2020 introduces the Foundational Stage (ages 3–8) and promotes play-based, activity-based, and experiential learning principles that are deeply rooted in Montessori education. Both approaches recognize that children learn best in engaging environments that encourage curiosity, discovery, and active participation.

Furthermore, Montessori education and NEP 2020 share a common goal of holistic development, focusing not only on academic growth but also on social, emotional, and moral values. Montessori classrooms are carefully prepared with materials that enhance sensory development, language skills, and independence, while also teaching life skills such as responsibility and cooperation. Similarly, NEP 2020 emphasizes creating stimulating learning environments, promoting multilingualism, and fostering 21st-century skills like communication, empathy, and ethical thinking. In terms of assessment, both approaches move away from rote learning and traditional examinations, instead supporting continuous observation and competency-based evaluation. Thus, the integration of Montessori principles within the framework of NEP 2020 can significantly strengthen early childhood education by creating confident, capable, and lifelong learners.
