Transportation connects people at national and international levels, cultivating trade and commerce, which is the spirit of the economy. Before entering merchandise at the international level, a country must develop trade and business within its boundaries. As long as there is delay in setting up connectivity, the furtherance of commerce in the country is unlikely. It is not wrong to say that connectivity is the jugular vein of trade, and trade is the soul of the economy. A pivotal role in trade and commerce is played by the transportation of people and goods. Among the different modes of transport, the rail network contributes the largest in our country. So, thinking of trade promotion and commerce in our country without railways is like expecting rain without clouds. Not only in trade and commerce but transport also plays a substantial role in tourism, which is one of the most significant factors fostering the economy.

The present road connectivity [without train service] of Kashmir with the rest of the country is exhausting because of the hilly terrain from Qazi Gund to Udhampur. It is onerous due to its long distance and winding contours. This exhausting and inconvenient road is economically burdensome because private transporters charge high fares to travel this long and hilly road. Besides the hilly terrain and long, winding road, travel is unpredictable in rainy seasons and winter, making the journey head-aching. In winter, the road gets blocked for several days if snowfall is heavy. The same happens in spring due to landslides during heavy rains. The bothersomeness of the road affects the inflow and outflow of people. Sometimes heavy snowfall and rains cause human lives to be lost and heavy business losses. Therefore, it hampers not only trade and commerce but also tourism in the valley.

Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) is undoubtedly a great redressal to the problems hampering merchandise and affecting tourism. It is a revolutionary initiative taken to boost trade and the economy of Jammu & Kashmir. The project is a triumph over the stalemate that had darkened the valley for the last three decades.

It was in 2008, after one hundred fifty years of the advent of the railway system in the subcontinent, that the train ran for the first time in Kashmir. USBRL is an enhancement to the train service already operational from Banihal to Baramulla. The project will ease travel and reduce the nine-hour journey to three hours. Saving time is saving

money. It will also reduce the heavy burden on the pockets of travelers imposed by private transporters.

Significantly, for the furtherance of train service in the valley, the central government should preferably give immediate extension to the service from Baramulla to Karnah and Machill. This extension will render easy access for people to move into other parts of the country and provide employment opportunities to those living close to borders. The outflow of people from the valley to other parts of the country is as significant as the inflow. Connectivity of people in border areas with the rest of the countrys cultures is also important. It will expose them to the rich heritage and multiculturalism of India, helping them understand the beauty of unity in diversity and enhancing their socio-political understanding.

A prolonged and arduous period of more than seventy years has finally culminated with the visit of Modi Ji. Travelers, both local and foreign, who have traversed the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway from Qazi Gund to Udhampur can attest to the grueling, harrowing, and exhaustive journey. The meandering and winding road has exacted a heavy toll on the people of Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in numerous fatalities due to accidents and landslides. It has also been a significant impediment to commerce and a considerable source of inconvenience and discomfort for the populace.

Modi Ji’s railway enforcement initiatives have met the people’s yearning for improved connectivity, freeing them from the tribulations of the Qazi Gund-Udhampur highway. The people of Jammu and Kashmir are grateful for the connectivity initiatives that have facilitated travel and stimulated commerce.

The development of any nation depends significantly on its transportation infrastructure, which connects people, fosters trade, and stimulates economic growth. To establish international trade, a country must first develop trade and business within its borders. Connectivity plays a crucial role in the growth of commerce, the backbone of any economy. In India, railways are the most vital contributor to different modes of transportation, and trade promotion and commerce depend heavily on railways.

Tourism is a significant factor fostering economic growth, and transportation plays a significant role. Better transportation infrastructure attracts more tourists, leading to more economic growth for the region.

However, regions such as the Kashmir valley face significant connectivity issues that hamper trade, commerce, and tourism. The hilly terrain makes road connectivity without train service exhausting. Private transporters charge high fares to travel this long and hilly road, making it economically burdensome. Weather conditions such as heavy snowfall and landslides make travel unpredictable, blocking the road for several days and causing human lives and heavy business losses. These adverse conditions hinder trade and commerce and affect tourism.

The railway initiatives in Kashmir play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity, which is vital for the regions overall development. By addressing longstanding connectivity challenges, these railway projects bridge remote and difficult terrains, linking Kashmir more effectively with the rest of the country. This improved accessibility not only reduces travel time but also makes transportation safer and more reliable for passengers.

The inclusion of advanced safety features, such as escape tunnels and ballastless tracks, ensures that the railway network is not only efficient but also secure and comfortable for travelers. The electrification of the Baramulla-Srinagar-Banihal-Sangaldan section further modernizes the regions rail infrastructure, promoting sustainable and faster travel options.

By connecting 19 railway stations and incorporating Indias longest transportation tunnel, these railway lines serve as a backbone for regional integration. They facilitate smoother movement of goods and people, which is essential for boosting trade, tourism, and economic activities in Kashmir. Thus, the railway expansion is more than just an infrastructure project; it is a lifeline that fosters greater connectivity, economic growth, and social cohesion for the people of Kashmir.
