Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, a steadfast patriot, became a martyr for the cause of integrating Kashmir with the rest of India. Detained for 45 days for defying Article 370, which mandated permits for people from rest of India to enter Kashmir, his death in prison sent shockwaves across the nation, ultimately leading to the abolition of the Permit System. His sacrifice immortalized the slogan of the era: “Nahi chalengey ek desh mein do Vidhan, do Pradhan aur do Nishan” (“One country cannot have two constitutions, two prime ministers, and two symbols”). The Modi government fulfilled the long-cherished desire of Syama Prasad Mukherjee to see Kashmir’s complete integration with India when, on August 5, 2019, it revoked the state’s special status by abolishing Articles 35A and 370.
Mukherjee recognized that territorial integrity is essential to the nation-state building process. He moved a resolution at the first national convention of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh(BJS) and campaigned across the country for the total integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India. He opposed the permit system that created bureaucratic barriers to entering Jammu and Kashmir and attempted to enter the state without a permit. For this, he was arrested and later mysteriously died in a Srinagar jail. Despite repeated pleas from his mother, Jogmaya Devi, Prime Minister Nehru did not form an enquiry committee to investigate the causes of his death.
Syama Prasad Mukherjee was one such leader who could foresee the future and set an objective accordingly. His Kashmir endeavour might have seemed impossible at the time he was alive. But seven decades down the line, what Prime Minister Narendra Modi did on August 5, 2019, by abrogating Articles 370 and 35A, he fulfilled the dream for which
Mukherjee lived and ultimately died. This historic move brought to fruition the dream for which Mukherjee lived and ultimately sacrificed his life. Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a man of versatile talent, became a barrister at an early age, later serving as Vice Chancellor and promoting Bengali as a medium of instruction. His legacy will be remembered for three pivotal contributions to India: opposing the partition of Bengal, founding the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, and agitating for the complete integration of Kashmir. Mukherjee’s principles and actions were driven by selflessness and a deep commitment to his country, without regard for personal recognition.
Unfortunately, biased historians, influenced first by colonial powers and later by leftist ideologies, have distorted Indian history, denying Mukherjee his rightful place. Correcting this historical injustice is crucial, as his contributions significantly shaped India’s trajectory. The agitation he led against the partition of Bengal ensured Kolkata remained
part of India, a fact often overlooked. His efforts in founding Jana Sangh and addressing the Kashmir issue further solidified his status as a true patriot and visionary leader. As a young youth, I argue that the whole of Jammu and Kashmir should celebrate the great Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee for his visionary dreams and unwavering patriotism. Mukherjee’s relentless fight for the complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir into India laid the foundation for a united and stronger nation. His sacrifice and dedication to this cause exemplify true Indian patriotism, making him a figure of immense importance for the region. By honoring his legacy, we acknowledge the courage and foresight that helped shape our nation’s unity, and we inspire future generations to uphold these values. As we celebrate the legacy and commemorate the death of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, it is crucial to reflect on his immense contributions to our nation and draw lessons for our future. Here are several suggestions for how we can honor his memory and ensure his sacrifices continue to inspire and guide us: First, we should integrate Dr. Mukherjee’s principles into our educational curriculum. His unwavering commitment to national integration, his efforts to promote regional languages, and his fearless stand against divisive policies must be taught in schools and universities. By doing so, we can
instil a sense of patriotism and awareness in our youth, helping them appreciate the values of unity and integrity that Mukherjee championed. Second, we must encourage scholarly research and unbiased historiography to correct the distortions in Indian history that have marginalized Mukherjee’s contributions. Establishing dedicated research centers and institutes focused on his life and work can provide a platform for historians and scholars to explore his legacy comprehensively. Publications, documentaries, and public lectures can also help disseminate accurate information about his role in shaping modern India. Third, public commemorations and events should be organized to celebrate his life and achievements. Establishing annual events, seminars, and symposiums on his birth and death anniversaries can serve as reminders of his legacy. These events should involve participation from all sections of society, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, to highlight his contributions to the region’s integration with India.Fourth, we should promote initiatives that reflect Mukherjee’s vision for India. This includes fostering national unity, advocating for regional development, and supporting policies that enhance national security and integrity. By aligning contemporary policies with Mukherjee’s ideals, we ensure that his vision for a united and strong India continues to guide our nation’s progress. Fifth, we must honor his memory through tangible tributes such as monuments, statues, and memorials. Naming institutions, roads, and public spaces after Dr. Mukherjee can serve as constant reminders of his contributions. Additionally, setting up scholarships and awards in his name can encourage young Indians to pursue excellence and contribute to the nation’s development. Finally, fostering a spirit of national integration and communal harmony is the best tribute we can pay to Dr. Mukherjee. By promoting dialogue, understanding, and cooperation among different communities, we can uphold the values he stood for. Encouraging youth involvement in nation-building activities and creating platforms for them to voice their ideas and opinions will ensure that the future generation carries forward Mukherjee’s legacy of selfless service and dedication to the nation.
