The core objective of the PM SHRI Schools theme is to transcend mere infrastructure, creating vibrant, sustainable learning sanctuaries that nurture both the child and their environment. In the ecologically sensitive and culturally unique context of Jammu & Kashmir, this vision takes on a profound local character. The emphasis is on designing schools that are in harmony with the region’s breath taking yet fragile landscape. This means incorporating robust green design to withstand the distinct seasons, from the snowy winters of Srinagar to the warmer summers of Jammu. These upgraded schools are becoming living lessons in sustainability for their students. By integrating features like solar panels to harness the abundant sunlight for energy, and advanced water harvesting systems to conserve precious resources, they directly address local challenges. The use of energy-efficient materials and designs ensures warm, well-lit classrooms without excessive carbon footprints. For a child in a PM SHRI School in Kargil or Anantnag, this translates to a warm classroom powered by the sun and a schoolyard that teaches the value of every drop of water. It’s about building a future for the youth of J&K that is not only educated but also deeply rooted in environmental stewardship and resilience, making the school a true beacon of holistic progress.

Launched on September 7, 2022, the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme is one of the most ambitious educational initiatives undertaken by the Government of India. With a staggering budgetary allocation of ₹273.6 billion, its goal is deceptively simple yet monumental: to transform over 14,500 existing schools into exemplar institutions. But beyond the numbers and the bureaucratic language lies a deeper vision—to create living, breathing models that fully embody the spirit and letter of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. As of October 2024, this vision has taken root in 10,855 schools across the nation, each embarking on a journey to redefine what a government school can be. The selection process itself breaks from tradition. Instead of a top-down imposition, schools enter a ‘Challenge Mode’ competing for the PM SHRI designation. A maximum of two schools per block—one elementary and one secondary—are chosen, ensuring a strategic and widespread impact. Once selected, the school proudly adds “PM SHRI” to its name, a public commitment to excellence that comes with the funds and support to achieve it. What truly sets these schools apart, however, is their holistic design, which moves far beyond rote learning. At the heart of the PM SHRI model is an emphasis on environmental sustainability that is woven into the daily fabric of school life. Campuses are being transformed into green havens, powered by solar panels and lit by energy-efficient LEDs. Students learn about water conservation not just as a chapter in a book, but by maintaining rainwater harvesting systems and managing waste within their own plastic-free zones. These schools are creating a generation of environmentally conscious citizens through practical, lived experience. Inside the classrooms, the digital leap is equally transformative. The dusty blackboard and chalk are being supplemented, and in some cases replaced, by smart classes, digital libraries, and sophisticated laboratories. For a child struggling to visualize the complex structure of a cell or the vastness of the solar system, these digital tools offer a window into a world of clarity and understanding. Perhaps the most humanizing aspect of the PM SHRI vision is its focus on rootedness and relevance. In an era where global often overshadows local, these schools are making a concerted effort to make students competent in Indian languages, strengthening their connection to their cultural heritage. Simultaneously, the scheme pragmatically looks to the future by “linking students to local industry for skill development. A survey by the Union Ministry of Education has noted a significant increase in enrolment in several PM SHRI schools in the 2023-24 academic year. This is a powerful metric. It suggests that parents and communities are noticing the change—the improved infrastructure, the modern teaching methods, the tangible focus on a child’s overall development—and are voting with their feet. The PM SHRI tag is becoming synonymous with quality, attracting students back to the public education system. The PM SHRI scheme is more than an infrastructure upgrade; it is a philosophical shift. It represents a belief that every child in India, regardless of their postal code, deserves access to a school that is green, digitally smart, culturally grounded, and skill-oriented. It is an attempt to build a Rising India from the ground up, starting with its most vital asset: its children. The journey is long, and the destination is still unfolding, but in thousands of schools across the country, the seeds of change have been sown. The real test will be in nurturing these seeds to full bloom, ensuring that the promise of a transformed classroom becomes an enduring reality for millions. But beyond logos and budgets, the real transformation lies in the day-to-day experience of teachers and students. PM SHRI schools mark a shift away from rote learning toward holistic education. Classrooms are becoming smart, interactive spaces powered by technology. Digital libraries, e-learning modules, and well-equipped laboratories are helping students grasp complex concepts with clarity and excitement. The humble blackboard now shares its place with smart screens, allowing lessons to come alive in vivid color and motion. For many children who had little exposure to the digital world, this is a leap into the future—one that equips them with the skills needed to thrive in a 21st-century economy. Equally transformative is the scheme’s commitment to cultural and social rootedness. In a world increasingly shaped by globalization, PM SHRI schools emphasize Indian languages, traditions, and local knowledge. Students are encouraged to connect deeply with their communities, learning not only about global issues but also about the industries and crafts that sustain their regions. Whether it is textile design in a weaving district or advanced
