The winds of change are sweeping through Kashmir’s valleys, and leading this transformation are the women, resilient, visionary, and boldly claiming their rightful place at the forefront of progress
In recent years, especially in the post-2019 reforms and government initiatives, women in Kashmir have become powerful agents of social and economic transformation. They are no longer held back by traditional limitations and made significant strides in education, business, and politics.
Education: It has emerged as the most powerful pillar of this change. Every town and every village, even in the most remote areas of Kashmir, is seeing girls entering classrooms, colleges, and universities with confidence. The doors that were earlier too distant to reach have been reached with the help of scholarships. Today, young Kashmiri women are studying in premier educational institutions of the country and entering professions such as medicine, engineering, research, and more.
The significance of this change lies in the figures as well as the attitude that is driving it. Parents are coming to understand that education is a necessity for their daughters. Daughters who were previously disadvantaged are now surpassing their parents’ achievements academically and redefining what it means to excel. Their achievements are not only personal; they are communal, sending a message to the world that there is no limit to human potential.
Entrepreneurship: Apart from education, the other prominent feature in the changing landscape in Kashmir is entrepreneurship. Now, women in Kashmir are no longer just economic contributors; they have become entrepreneurs. They are changing the face of economic empowerment.
At the grassroots level, self-help groups have been instrumental in mobilizing women, especially in rural areas. These groups are not just economic organizations, but also provide a platform for learning, cooperation, and empowerment. Women are now involved in handicrafts, food processing, tailoring, and other business ventures, which provide them with a source of income.
What is interesting to note is the fusion of tradition and modernity. Ancient occupations such as the pashmina work and saffron cultivation are now being linked with a broader market through digital media. Women have been able to take their products beyond geographical boundaries through social media and e-commerce sites. This is economic in nature and involves a strong empowering factor, enabling women to manage their lives independently.
Inspiring Trailblazers: The journey of empowerment is illuminated by inspiring women who are redefining possibilities. Sania Zehra, also known as the ‘Bee Queen of Kashmir,’ has made beekeeping a profitable venture for herself as she has hundreds of bee colonies producing thousands of kilograms of organic honey, which earns her a handsome amount.
Mehvish Mushtaq is Kashmir’s first female Android developer. Her highly successful app ‘Dial Kashmir’ has changed the face of digital services in Kashmir and has gained her accolades all over India.
Political Participation and Leadership: The political developments too, have gained momentum. The reservation policy of 33% for women in Panchayati Raj Institutions has enabled thousands of women to participate actively in governance.
Nowadays, women are influencing budgets, infrastructure projects, and community initiatives, moving away from merely symbolic positions to positions of leadership in governance. Better credit links for SHGs and government policies also underscore the increasing acknowledgement of the value added by women to the economy and governance.
Challenges that Fuel Determination: Despite this remarkable progress, challenges remain. The mental health struggles, economic vulnerabilities, patriarchal norms, and hurdles in areas such as property rights continue to affect many women.
Yet these challenges have only strengthened their resolve. The women of Kashmir continue to turn adversity into strength to provide for their families, to mobilize their communities and to innovate solutions with unwavering resilience.
Voices of Strength: The change that has come about in Kashmir perhaps resonates most strongly through the voices of its women, who were previously silent but now speak with a newfound confidence, determination, and strength. The change that their voices speak of has been from silence to voice, from limitation to liberation. This has been captured eloquently by one woman, who says, “We carried silence for years.
Now we carry ambition, purpose, and dreams that refuse to be contained. Another woman captures the change that has come about with the same strength of voice when she says, “Kashmir is changing, and so are we. Our stories are no longer defined by hardship, but by hope and determination.” The voices of these women capture not just their change, but a change that has come about at a collective level, wherein the women of Kashmir are no longer in the background but at the forefront of a new, empowered Kashmir.
A New Chapter for Kashmir: The advancement of women in Kashmir is a homegrown, hard-won effort. While policies and government initiatives offer important support, the real engine behind this change is the strength, courage, and vision of women in Kashmir.
As education expands, enterprises flourish, and leadership strengthens, women are no longer merely participants in Kashmir’s development, they are the heartbeat and the driving force of a progressive future.
