The political and social landscape of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Gilgit-Baltistan has long been shrouded in heavy state narratives and strategic silence. Behind the official slogans lies a reality experienced by ordinary citizens—one marked by administrative neglect, systemic suppression, and a profound crisis of identity. Here we explore the ground reality of the region through the unfiltered perspectives of its people, detailing their daily struggles against inflation, misgovernance, and the overwhelming presence of the state security apparatus.

Every Corner’s Cry!

Walk through any neighborhood, tea stall, or market square in the region, and the undercurrent of resentment is impossible to ignore. In every alley and street corner, the conversation invariably turns toward the heavy-handed approach of the state authorities. For decades, the local population has felt the weight of an administration that prioritizes territorial control over human development.

Resources are diverted, local voices are sidelined, and any peaceful assembly questioning federal policies is met with immediate force. The systemic exploitation of water resources and minerals, alongside the imposition of heavy taxes without local representation, has made the sense of economic and political subjugation a permanent fixture of daily conversation.

Misgovernance Is Our Fate.. The Voice of Commeners

For the average citizen, the grand promises of autonomy and development have yielded nothing but crumbling infrastructure, prolonged power outages, and a severe shortage of basic amenities. “Misgovernance is our fate,” is a common refrain among the youth who face rampant unemployment despite holding university degrees.

Public healthcare is minimal, roads remain neglected, and the region faces acute inflation on essential commodities like flour and electricity. The local leadership is widely seen as a puppet administration, lacking the actual legislative power or financial autonomy to address public grievances. When the common man demands basic rights, their pleas are lost in a bureaucratic maze that serves Islamabad rather than the residents of Muzaffarabad or Gilgit.

…..ISI Won’t!

In this region, the boundaries of civilian law enforcement are fluid and frequently overridden. Even if local police show leniency or attempt to handle civil dissent through legal means, the shadow of the deep state is never far behind. The intelligence apparatus operates with absolute impunity, keeping a watchful eye on journalists, civil society members, and student leaders.

Dissent is treated not as a democratic right, but as a direct threat to national security. Activists who speak out against land grabs, resource exploitation, or administrative failures often find themselves subjected to arbitrary detentions, midnight raids, and continuous surveillance. The local sentiment remains clear: civilian authorities are merely a facade, while the real, unchecked power lies with the intelligence agencies.

Say, Pakistan, Pakistan and only Pakistan!

Survival in the region requires a public display of compliance. To secure employment, avoid state scrutiny, or simply live without harassment, one must strictly adhere to the state-approved narrative. Expressing any alternative political thought, advocating for genuine independence, or questioning regional policies can immediately result in being labeled a traitor.

The pressure to constantly validate one’s loyalty to the state creates an environment of fear and self-censorship. For many, chanting patriotic slogans is not a reflection of genuine allegiance, but a necessary survival mechanism to protect their families, livelihoods, and personal safety from an unforgiving establishment.

Azaaadi For Us Is A Name, We Don’t Live It!

The region of Azad Jammu and Kashmir carries the word *Azaad* (Free) in its official title, yet the reality on the ground contradicts this name entirely. Structurally, the local government cannot pass any major legislation without the approval of the Kashmir Council, which is heavily controlled by federal authorities.

The judiciary, bureaucracy, and financial distribution are all managed tightly from the outside. Local leaders are forced to swear allegiance to the accession narrative just to contest elections. This superficial freedom serves as a political tool for international consumption, while the residents remain entirely dependent, lacking the actual authority to govern their own land, manage their own revenues, or make sovereign decisions.

Leave Us and Let Us Live!

Ultimately, the collective cry rising from the valleys and mountains of the region is a simple plea for dignity, peace, and basic human rights. The people are weary of being treated as geopolitical pawns in a perpetual security conflict. They do not want to be monitored, suppressed, or economically starved any longer.

The baseline demand is simple: “Leave us free, we want to live. Let us live.” It is an appeal to strip away the heavy militarization, dismantle the oppressive security grid, and allow the local population to breathe, work, and build a future for their children without the constant shadow of fear.
