A Million Dollar Advice By Mother

Sunday evening. The dark night is ready to take over. The play-field is empty, with a complete silence, as if the ghosts have overtaken the ground for the night. Minutes before, it was filled with people playing and running in the ground.

The darkness has completely taken over it, and I am struggling to decide where to go. My numb feet start moving towards home, but my body feels stuck without soul. This evening, I got into a fight with a guy and beat him ruthlessly. I didn’t even think for a second that I was doing something wrong. But once I let him go, I remembered that I have to answer for this nonsense act at home.

I have no good reason to defend myself. I will be punished for sure. What if someone tells them I was fighting with someone? How will my parents take it? What will happen? How will they respond? What if the complaint comes to my school tomorrow? Will the parents of that guy come to my house and cause problems?

I was in a dilemma about how to get over it and what to do next.

A small boy came across me and said, “Your mother is asking for you. Did you get into a fight with someone?
” Oh no! Someone had informed her that I beat a guy in the ground.

The little courage I had collected to go home was gone. I felt like I was dead on the spot. I had made a huge mistake today. It’s all over for me now. I will be punished for my actions.

A soft voice calling my name… I heard my mother calling me two or three times, and I remained silent. But after one more call, I couldn’t help but answer. She came to me and took my hand.

We are home now, and there is been no conversation. It feels like the calm before the storm. I’m sure I’ll be punished today in front of the whole family, which is embarrassing.

The dinner is being served, but I’m unable to swallow a single grain of food due to tension and guilt. The dinner is over, and everyone has left the kitchen except me and Mumaa.

Mumaa finally opened up about it. My mouth dried up, and my lips started to fumble. No words came out of my throat. “What was the reason you beat up that guy in the ground?” she asked. “Don’t you feel ashamed? People were watching your behavior. What must they have thought about you and your family? Is this what I taught you to do?”

I replied in a dead voice, “The guy started cussing over a silly thing and was making derogatory remarks about the family. I jumped at him and beat him for his derogatory language.”

Mamma hold my hand and said, “Remember, if someone makes derogatory remarks, he himself is reflecting his inner being. My boy, remember that whenever someone does such things to you, run – don’t fight for such things.” She helped me understand how to control my anger issues and keep my moral values.

This evening changed my inner being forever. This advice made my life free from conflicts from that day on. My mother’s advice changed my behavior from that of a beast to a being with compassion. I refuse to take a million dollars over the advice of my mother.
