The Indian Army, proud of the people of Kashmir, has been vigorously involved in mainstreaming the youth of Jammu and Kashmir through schemes and initiatives focused on providing opportunities for personal growth, skill development, and career advancement. The initiatives are many and majorly include Agniveer Recruitment, Sadhbavana, and Youth Exchange Programs, among others, all of which target the empowerment of young people, national integration, and employability. These initiatives also channel the energy of the youth into constructive activities, coupled with a sense of discipline, patriotism, and self-reliance while creating avenues for them to serve in the defense forces or other meaningful careers. More importantly, through participation in educational and sports activities, the Army fosters leadership skills in the region’s youth and gives them greater confidence.
The Indian Army, through the Agniveer Recruitment Scheme, has made an innovative effort to recruit and empower youth from all parts of India, including Jammu and Kashmir. Recruitment of young people under this scheme is for four years with the possibility of extension, and youth will be given a chance to serve the nation while acquiring valuable experience, training, and skills. After the four years, a share of the trainees will be retained for permanent employment while the rest will be equipped with some skills and certification to enhance other career options. The Agniveer scheme is to empower the youth in discipline, physical fitness, leadership, and patriotism toward the defense of the country, thereby bringing personal growth as well as national security. It also attracts a relatively younger, more dynamic force that will be more effective for the Army.
Sadhbavana is the GoodWill programme initiated by the Indian Army to bring peace, harmony, and national integration in Jammu and Kashmir. The programme is aimed at boosting the morale of the locals by the Army. It consists of a plethora of activities ranging from medical camps to education, vocational training, sports, and cultural events. Sadhbavana tries to bridge the gap between armed forces and civil society, by providing direct benefits such as healthcare, infrastructure, and career prospects for youth.
It is through community engagement that Sadhbavana aims at minimizing alienation among the local people, integration of the nation, and providing a peaceful atmosphere. The project makes the youths divert their energies to constructive activities instead of involving themselves in radicalization that might disturb the harmony of the area. Over time, it has ensured the improvement of the relationship between the Army and the locals, thus developing both social and psychological well-being in the area. It continues to be an important task for promoting goodwill and stability in Jammu and Kashmir.
The guiding motto for the Operation is “Jawan Aur Awaam, Aman Hai Muqaam,” a great slogan that the Indian Army utilizes to highlight the unity, peace, and cooperation that exists between the armed forces and the locals. The phrase will be “Soldiers and the Public, Peace is the Destination.” It shows the intention of the Army in maintaining peace and stability within Jammu and Kashmir through setting up good relationships between the military and civilians. The project aims at mutual efforts and respect pointing out that even the soldiers and the public are working together for a common reason-peaceful, harmonious environment for all.
Operation Sadbhavana’s accomplishments and achievements in education are, by far, unique in themselves. It has enabled students to attend institutions that could not even be considered for studies before. As a personal account with this effort, I’d like to point out that Army Goodwill Schools under the Operation Sadbhavana initiative have altered the entire spectrum of education. Such schools have also been able to provide quality education while engaging locals as teachers, administrators, and non-teaching staff and hence community involvement.
One of the examples related to Sponsorships and financial support comes in the form of a story of a student who suffered from very harsh emotional and financial challenges when their mother died due to cancer. Despite these hardships, they passed the entrance exam for the Army Goodwill Public School in Pahalgam, a residential institution that provides quality education. But the expenditure of tuition fees and all other expenses, which was approximately one lakh, was out of the question from the family’s end. Now, when everything seemed to go wrong, the Indian Army, operating in line with ongoing support through Operation Sadbhavana, came forward to provide full-ride scholarship to the student. All of this included tuition fees, hostel fee, books, and all such recurring expenditures from which a student could not study further. It is just another example of such initiatives the Indian Army takes under its wing, which will, in its long run, lead to successful fruition in developing youths in Jammu and Kashmir.
Under this Operation Sadbhavana, numerous underprivileged youths of Jammu and Kashmir are receiving education free of charge as it covers complete sponsorship of studies. Thus, the most unfortunate students facing grave financial stress, yet now acquire quality education; under Indian Army’s care, they become not only remarkable performers academically but personally, too.
The success of Operation Sadbhavana goes way beyond education because it has provided health care and shown its considerable impact. There were teams of army doctors, visiting remote locations to treat the patients suffering from various ailments for free. All these medical camps were a huge part of healthcare efforts by the Indian Army during the program.
The teams always had a female doctor, who became quite popular among the local women. This initiative was a part of the medical care system that also assisted in building trust and goodwill between the Army and the local people. This mission is still continuing in the rural areas and shows how the army has crossed borders not only by safeguarding the nation through sacrifices but also healing its people through well-thought schemes.
Operation Sadbhavana has been playing a vital role in supporting the youth of Jammu and Kashmir through career counseling, skill development workshops, and educational tours to cities like Delhi and Mumbai. For many young people from remote areas, these programs open new avenues and inspire big dreams. Sports events, such as cricket tournaments, help build teamwork and discipline, while cultural activities celebrate local traditions and showcase talent. Through all this, the Indian Army is rendering aid and providing hope so that these youngsters grow into capable hands, making a better feeling in the community about oneness.
Education and Skill Development
Realizing the necessity of literacy and skill upgradation, the Indian Army has initiated literacy as well as vocational training centers in Kashmir. Many schools have been established and sponsored by the army that mainly cater to children of weaker economic backgrounds. More so, vocational training centers have been initiated wherein skills like carpentry, tailoring, and computer literacy have been imparted so that youth acquire sustainable livelihoods. Initiatives like Super-50, scholarship offers, sports events, developmental work are some of the remarkable achievements of the Army here.
Also, tailoring, which acts as a Self-employed set up, is a Corporate Social Responsibility project funded by GENPACT through the coalition of NGO REACHA and SRUJNA. Free to women, it teaches them the tailoring trade, equipping them with the latest and modern machinery. Founded with a noble objective to empower the youth, infuse corporate culture, and provide modern amenities, the youth centers like Roshan Mustaqbil Youth Centre in Kupwara are an initiative towards empowering youth through providing them modern amenities and the opportunity to enhance their growth prospects. The facilities offered at this center include well-stocked libraries, study areas, internet facilities, group discussion rooms, and career counseling facilities, including coffee and tea available. It acts as a platform for young minds to seek resources that facilitate learning, skill development, and personal growth. The center is aimed at providing an atmosphere for youth to develop their knowledge, careers, and interests. In this manner, the Indian Army assists the region’s youth in gaining a brighter future.
Sports and Youth Engagement
Sports have appeared to be an indispensable activity for Kashmiri youth, directing their energies into constructive and productive outlets. Sport activities and tournaments are periodically hosted by the Indian Army with open participation by the locals. Apart from sport, such events help to forge relationships and “goodwill” among participants transcending their respective backgrounds. To keep the youth away from drugs, one of the most prominent tournaments by the Army has been the famous cricket tournament of North Kashmir, known as the Kashmir Premier League (KPL). The KPL witnessed participation of 224 players and is being viewed as one of the best tournaments in the region organized by Army. The matches were streamed live on Facebook to engage more people from the rest of the country and, in particular, the Union Territory.
Apart from this, the Chinar Clubs was formed in collaboration between the Indian Army and REACHA (Research and Extension Association for Conservation Horticulture and Agroforestry), an NGO. Its aim was to help youth gain skills to make a living. The voluntary organization, REACHA, is involved in a partnership with the Indian Army to keep the youth engaged by various activities related to skill development, sports, cultural events, and other programs. These initiatives are to be taken in order to help young minds grow better and improve themselves in terms of personal and professional development. They are provided with skills and opportunities for a brighter future. Chinar Clubs offers training in domains like computers, retail, music, and many more. Students become self-reliant and financially independent.
The Chinar Nau Jawan Clubs has played a crucial role in empowering rural women by training them in local handicrafts, thus creating self-sustaining micro-business units. Women-led SHGs have not only contributed to rural tourism initiatives but have also showcased their relatively affordable Kashmiri handicraft clothing at major events like the Amarnath Yatra. This way, the club helped women to become financially independent and promote local craftsmanship, while contributing to the economy and cultural heritage of the region in the long run.
The Dagger Parivaar School in Baramulla highlights the Indian Army’s commitment to social welfare. This school focuses on providing education and rehabilitation to specially-abled children, offering a supportive environment where they receive tailored education and therapy to help them integrate into society. The army’s dedication to healthcare is also evident through the story of a student who underwent cardiac surgery at the Army’s Research and Referral Hospital. These initiatives show the army’s role in fostering inclusive development and supporting vulnerable sections of the community. Through such efforts, the army ensures that no one is left behind in their journey towards a better life.
